WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Billy Collins, Jr. scored a game-high 25 points, including the final four points of the game, to lead Adrian in a comeback win over Gettysburg 70-65 in a first-round game of the Ramada Inn/King's Monarch Tournament on Tuesday.
In the first ever meeting between Gettysburg (3-6) and Adrian (4-4), the Bullets were led by Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) who scored 20 points. Freshman Renato Tambellini (Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) scored a career-high 13 points and Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) added 12 points in the loss.
With 12:43 remaining, Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) nailed a jump shot to give the Bullets a 42-35 advantage.
Adrian proceeded to wipe away the Bullets' seven point lead on a 25-10 run started by a Ryan Gallus jumper. Collins scored eight points during the run and Brandon Giles hit the bucket that ended the run, giving Adrian its largest lead of the game with 3:31 remaining, 60-52.
Gettysburg quickly made a run when Tambellini hit two 3-pointers in the span of 10 seconds, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 60-58.
With 1:56 to go, the Bullets took a one-point lead, 62-61 on a basket by Spadafora.
Then Gallus drove hard to the basket and was fouled on the play. His shot dropped in and he made the ensuing free throw. Gallus' 3-point play put Adrian ahead for good.
Gettysburg kept the game close when Mike Beck (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater) hit two free throws with :21 remaining, cutting the Bulldog lead to 66-65. However, Adrian put the game away when Collins hit two free throws and made a basket at the buzzer.
In contrast to the second half, the first half was all Gettysburg. The Bullets took a 6-4 lead with 15:18 on the clock and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the half.
The Bullets opened the game on a 12-4 run, getting six points from Spadafora and four from Whelan. The Gettysburg lead was pushed to 30-21 on a 3-pointer by Tambellini with less than a minute remaining in the half. Adrian closed the gap to six at halftime, 30-24.
Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) led Gettysburg with five rebounds.
The Bullets return to action tomorrow in the consolation game of the Ramada Inn/King's Monarch Tournament against either King's or Susquehanna. Game time is 5 p.m.
