COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Molly Guntli scored a game-high 15 points to push Ursinus past Gettysburg 58-56 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) added 14 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the loss.
Ursinus (3-2, 2-1 CC) erased a seven-point deficit late in the second half. The Bears cut the lead to one with the help of two made jumpers by Guntli. They then went ahead to stay with 3:20 remaining when Sarah Hennessey nailed a three-point shot.
Reilly made a layup to cut the lead to two with 1:45 to go, but Ursinus iced the game with three made free throws by Stephanie Cavalier.
The Bullets (3-3, 2-1 CC) jumped out to an early 15-10 lead on the strength of six made free throws. Ursinus responded quickly and moved ahead by six points on the strength of nine first half points from Jenna Whylings.
Gettysburg cut the lead 28-24 at the half with the help of Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation), who scored 11 points in the first frame.
A 3-pointer by Hennessey increased the Bears' lead to seven with 16:54 remaining in the second half.
The Bullets then went on a 23-9 run, started by a layup from Reilly to take a 49-42 lead. Bengel had 10 points and Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) added seven during the run before Ursinus took control late in the game for the win.
Eiden scored 15 points and Tarbell finished the game with nine points and five rebounds for the Bullets. Whylings finished the game with 11 points for the Bears.
The Bullets held a 43-37 advantage in rebounding.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday at McDaniel. Game time is 7 p.m.
