WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kristy Costa led McDaniel with 28 points as the Green Terror sneaked out to a late lead and outlasted Gettysburg for a 72-69 win in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Thursday.
Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) collected her fifth double-double in seven games this season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Bengel's 12 boards brought her career total to 767, enough to overtake former teammate Elizabeth Ross for seventh on the all-time Gettysburg rebounding list. Ross graduated a year ago with 764 career rebounds.
Bengel's 18 points brought her to within 16 points of Kelly Geise's 1,342 career points and third on the Bullets' all-time leading scorers list.
The Green Terror got on the board first to start the game and led until the 11:09 mark in the second half, when two free throws by Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) tied the game at 46.
In an exciting final 11 minutes of play, there would be four lead changes and seven ties. The Bullets' first lead came 33 seconds after Hartman's free throws on a jumper by Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M).
With 7:29 left on the clock, another Hartman foul shot deadlocked the game in its fifth tie at 53. The Bullets maintained the lead over the next four minutes and 22 seconds, managing to stretch their lead to as many as four three times in that stretch, the last time on an Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) layup with 5:20 remaining.
Sara Franz tied the game at 65 on a 3-pointer with 3:05 left on the clock, and Gettysburg would not lead again. Katy Powell gave the Terror a two-point lead that Marshall answered with two free throws to knot the score at 67 with 1:06 remaining.
On the decisive play of the night, Powell made a jumper and was fouled on the play with 19 ticks left and made the free throw to give McDaniel a 70-67 lead. The Bullets managed to close the game to one point again when Tarbell made two free throws after she was fouled pulling down an offensive rebound.
On the ensuing inbound, Gettysburg gave a quick foul, sending Powell back to the line, where she hit both free throws. The Bullets final desperation heave missed off the glass as the game ended.
Bengel's 18 points and 12 rebounds led Gettysburg in both categories. Marshall had 14 points and Hartman dished out five assists.
For McDaniel, Costa's 18 led all scorers. Powell was the only other Green Terror player to score in double digits with 12. Costa and Amy Watson each pulled down seven boards. Costa also picked up a game-high three steals while Franz led McDaniel with five assists.
