McDaniel uses big second half to down Gettysburg, 74-66

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kristy Costa scored a game-high 22 points and sparked a key second-half run to help No. 25 McDaniel defeat Gettysburg 74-66 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Tuesday.

Costa went 5-for-8 from the field and netted five of her six free throws in the second half to help the Green Terror (18-2, 12-1 CC) stretch its winning streak to 14 games. The Bullets (10-9, 7-5 CC) fall to a CC top-ranked team for the second game in a less than a week.

Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country), who led four Bullets in double figures, recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s School [DE]) put Gettysburg up by three with 1 minute, 52 seconds remaining in the game after netting two free throws that proved to be the Bullets’ final points of the game.

On the next possession, Costa dropped a jumper to bring the Green Terror within one before Heather Thompson converted twice from the charity stripe to put McDaniel up for good at 67-66.

A couple negative Bullet possessions led to the Green Terror registering 7-for-8 from the free-throw line to close the game with an eight-point advantage.

McDaniel outshot the Bullets 49-27 in the second half and jumped to a 22-6 run after halftime to erase the Bullet lead in 8 minutes, 40 seconds.

Bengel and Ross each provided four points to help Gettysburg jump to a quick 11-3 lead in the first five minutes of the contest.

Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) poured in her five points and treys from Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) and Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) extended the Bullet lead to 22-8 with 12:20 left in the half.

Gettysburg enjoyed its largest lead at 18 with 9:42 to go in the first stanza, but a 3-pointer from Kelly Cramp and a made jumper by Costa helped the Green Terror work to close the half in 14-point deficit.

Marshall made three from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points while Ross and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) each chipped in 10. Ross also pulled down eight boards.

Thompson had 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds for McDaniel.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Muhlenberg. Game time is 4 p.m.
