Box Score
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Mike Spadafora (Richboro,
PA/Archbishop Wood) scored a career-high 27 points,
David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep)
added 22 and Gettysburg posted its highest point total in
nearly five years with a 96-86 Centennial Conference (CC)
men’s basketball win at Washington (Md.) on Saturday.
Spadafora hit 8 of 12 shots from the
floor and 9 of 13 from the free throw line as the Bullets
(13-9, 10-5 CC) scored on 12 of their first 14 possessions
to build a 27-9 lead in the opening nine minutes. Glaser collected
16 of his 22 during a wild second half in which the teams
combined for 108 points and 57 of their 78 trips to the free
throw line.
Despite posting season highs with 23
turnovers and 37 fouls, Gettysburg improved to 6-2 in CC road
games this season and moved into a third-place tie with Haverford
and Ursinus in the conference standings.
Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie
[NJ]) added 17 points and matched a career high with
seven assists for the Bullets, who hadn’t reach the mid-90’s
since a 101-91 victory at Dickinson on Feb. 19, 2000. Saturday’s
win was Gettysburg’s ninth in its last 10 meetings with Washington
(9-13, 6-9 CC) and fifth in its last six trips to Cain Athletic
Center.
Travis Moore netted a team-high
21 points and dished out six assists for the Shoremen, who
converted only 3 of 18 3-pointers. Kyle Stem
added 20 off the Washington bench.
Before the high-scoring finish, the Bullets
enjoyed a commanding start. Glaser hit two free throws on
his team’s opening possession and the visitors were off to
the races.
Jakobe hit a jumper, Glaser converted
a layup and Jakobe drilled a 3-pointer on Gettysburg’s next
three trips. Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore)
added a 3-pointer, Glaser scored in close and Jakobe drained
another trey, putting the Bullets ahead 17-4 after seven straight
successful possessions.
Two turnovers and the team’s first miss
didn’t stop Gettysburg’s momentum. Spadafora canned a 3-pointer
and a jumper on back-to-back possessions, and Matt Whelan
(Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) nailed
a three to give the Bullets their largest lead of the half
at 25-6 with only 7:45 gone.
Despite their struggles from 3-point
range, the Shoremen chipped away at the deficit, pulling within
32-24 on a layup from Jonathan Webb and staying
within a manageable 37-27 at halftime.
To Washington’s chagrin, however, the
first five minutes of the second half looked like a rerun.
Keyed by seven quick points from Whelan,
Gettysburg built a pair of 22-point leads, the latter a 55-33
edge with exactly 15:00 remaining following a Pombar layup.
The Shoremen used a 14-4 run over the
next 3 minutes, 44 seconds to pull within 12, but the Bullets
maintained a comfortable double-digit lead until the game’s
final minutes.
Fouling on nearly every defensive possession
in the final four minutes, Washington got within 88-82 after
a Moore 3-pointer with 55 seconds left.
Two free throws by Stem kept it a two-possession
game at 90-84, but Gettysburg went 6-for-8 from the line in
the final 50 seconds to seal the win. The Bullets attempted
22 free throws and only three field goals – all on the same
possession – in the game’s final 3:45.
Whelan was the fourth Gettysburg player
in double figures, finishing with 10. With the game’s very
first point, Glaser became the fourth Bullet to score 1,500
career points, winding up the day with 1,521.
Spadafora’s previous career scoring high
was 26 points, set in Gettysburg’s 75-69 win at Navy in December.
The Bullets’ previous season highs for turnovers (22) and
fouls (27) were also set in that game.
Webb and Joe Breslin chipped
in with 12 points apiece for the Shoremen.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday
at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 8 p.m. The Blue Jays moved
into a first-place tie with Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
