CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown,
MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) and Jen Bengel (Timonium,
MD/Roland Park Country School) scored 23 points apiece,
leading Gettysburg to a 70-65 victory over Washington (Md.)
in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on
Saturday.
Ross, putting on a show in her third
and final homecoming, hit 11 of 15 shots, pulled down 15 rebounds
and dished out six assists, as the Bullets (12-10, 9-6 CC)
posted their eighth straight win against the Shorewomen (5-17,
3-12 CC). The senior continued her charge toward 1,000 career
points, finishing the day with 993.
Bengel also came up big, adding nine
rebounds and four steals to her 23-point outing. Katie
Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) hit
double digits with 11 points for Gettysburg, which didn’t
go ahead to stay until 5:11 remaining on a Ross layup.
Regina Barrett led Washington
with 20 points, including a 5-for-7 showing from 3-point range.
Lauren Duckworth added 16 points and Brenda
Lucas finished with 10.
Entering the day, the Bullets had posted
six consecutive double-digit wins against the Shorewomen.
Led by Barrett’s sharpshooting, Washington made sure Saturday’s
contest was close throughout.
Barrett knocked down 4 of 5 threes to
finish the first half with 14 points, keeping Washington within
36-34 at the intermission. Jeremy Cook’s jumper
gave the Shorewomen their first lead at 37-36, but Ross answered
with a put-back and layup on consecutive trips to make it
40-37 Gettysburg.
Seven points from Eiden helped the Bullets
build a 49-43 lead. Barrett’s lone 3-pointer of the second
half, however, keyed an 8-2 Washington run that tied the game
at 51 with 7:01 remaining.
Bengel hit 1 of 2 free throws to give
the visitors a one-point edge before Duckworth knocked down
a jumper to give the Shorewomen their final lead of the game
at 53-52 with 6:30 remaining.
The teams traded missed layups before Emily
Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) evened
the score at 53 with a free throw. Following a missed Washington
3-pointer, Ross converted a 3-point play, putting Gettysburg
ahead for good at 56-53.
Duckworth followed with a layup, but Ross knocked
down a jumper to restore the three-point lead. Cook pulled
the Shorewomen within one for the final time with a layup,
but Bengel answered at the other end and Jamie Marshall
(Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) followed with a layup
to make it 62-57.
Washington stayed within 64-62 in the final
minute, but Falk hit six free throws in the final 42 seconds
to seal the win.
Bengel and Ross each posted a game’s worth
of statistics by halftime, with Bengel scoring 18 of the Bullets’
36 points and Ross adding 10 points, seven rebounds and five
assists before the break. The duo scored the game’s first
10 points and helped Gettysburg build a 35-24 lead, but a
late rally kept the Shorewomen in the hunt.
Lucas hit a layup and Barrett nailed a 3-pointer
to cut the deficit to 35-29. Duckworth followed with a layup
and Barrett drilled her fourth trey of the half with 19 seconds
left to make it 36-34 at the break.
With the win, the Bullets moved into a fourth-place
tie with Swarthmore in the CC standings. The Garnet fell to
sixth-place Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The Diplomats
trail both teams by one game with three to play.
Falk finished with nine points.
LaToya Turner added a team-best
seven rebounds for Washington.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at
Johns Hopkins. Game time is 6 p.m.
