SCRANTON,
Pa. With his 4-minute, 40-second pin against
Wilkes, Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley)
moved into sole possession of second place on two Gettysburg
record lists, leading the Bullets to a 1-2 day at the Scranton
quad match in wrestling action on Saturday.
Shank
finished his day 3-0, including the one fall, to improve
to 36-5 with 14 pins. With his 35th win, the
freshman broke a tie with Jake Dell (1994-98) and took sole
possession of second place on Gettysburgs single-season wins list.
It was also a new Bullet record for wins by a freshman.
His 14th pin of the campaign gave him second
place on that list as well, breaking a tie with Jamie Binnell.
Dell
is the program leader in single-season wins (40) and falls
(17).
As
a team, the Bullets (9-10) opened the day with a 42-0 win
over SUNY Maritime before falling to Wilkes 29-15 and Scranton,
27-21.
Against
the Privateers (3-13), Kevin Dougherty (Gloucester,
NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) opened Gettysburgs
day with his first fall of the season, pinning Keegan
Van Auken in 3:54.
Ray
Cottiers (New Milford, NJ/New Milford) added a 4-0 win at 133 before Shank recorded the record-tying
win with a 16-0 technical fall victory just before the second
period expired, pushing the Bullet advantage to 14-0.
Tom
Fives (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Kyle Ibbitson
(Dayville, CT/Killingly) added 3-2 and 6-3 decisions,
respectively, before Dan Donnelly (Garden City, NY/Garden
City) added a 15-4 major decision at 174.
John
Leinberger (Great Falls, VA/Langley) and Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) completed Gettysburgs second
shutout of the season with pins at 184 and heavyweight,
respectively.
Leinbergers fall came with two seconds remaining in regulation
while Pattanite notched his pin
at the 1:41 mark.
Jeff
Morgan (Reston, VA/Langley) added a forfeit win at 197.
Against
the Colonels (9-8), Jeremy Mayer staked Wilkes
to a 4-0 lead with his 10-2 victory.
Cottiers
and Shank tallied back-to-back pins for the Bullets to give
Gettysburg a 12-4 advantage.
A
Michael Sciulara
forfeit win at 149 pulled the Colonels within 12-10 before
Fives stretched the lead back to 15-10 with his 8-3 win
at 157.
However,
Tom Leggios
41-second pin at 165 started a Wilkes rally, giving the
Colonels a 16-15 lead en route to the 29-15 victory.
Against
the Royals (9-9), Rich Russell won by fall
in 3:58 to give Scranton a 6-0 lead.
Cottiers
tied the match with a forfeit victory and Shank added a
10-4 decision to give Gettysburg its only lead
of the match at 9-6.
Donell Young won by forfeit at 149 and Nick Barber
and Steve Tatum had back-to-back pins to give
the Royals a 24-9 lead.
Tom
Phillips stretched the advantage to
27-9 with a 5-4 win at 174 before Donnelly, Morgan and Pattanite
all recorded victories to close the match.
Donnelly
won 4-2 at 184, Morgan had a 2-minute,
54-second pin at 197 and Pattanite
won by decision, 5-2.
The
Bullets nine wins is the highest single-season win
total for the program since they recorded 10 wins during
the 1999-2000 campaign.
Pattanites two victories gives him 20 for the season,
marking the first time two Gettysburg wrestlers have reached
20 wins in three seasons when Luke Palumbo (28) and Steve
Kareha (21) accomplished the feat during the 2001-02 campaign.
The
Bullets return to action next Saturday at the Centennial
Conference championships hosted by Muhlenberg. Action begins
at 10 a.m.
