BALTIMORE, Md. - Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway
Regional) scored a team-high 15 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer
with 2:46 remaining, to lift Gettysburg
over Johns Hopkins 63-60 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action
on Wednesday.Fromm knocked down a career-high three 3-pointers, dished
out three assists and made a crucial steal in the final minute, helping the Bullets
(14-9, 11-5 CC) overcome foul trouble to leading scorer David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern
Prep) and snap a five-game losing streak to the Blue Jays (14-8, 11-5
CC).
With the win, Gettysburg
moved into a three-way tie with Johns Hopkins and Ursinus for second place in
the CC standings with two games remaining. Franklin & Marshall took over sole
possession of first place with win at McDaniel on Wednesday. The victory also
allowed the Bullets to clinch a spot in the CC playoffs.
Mike Spadafora (Richboro,
PA/Archbishop Wood) posted his first collegiate double-double with 14 points
and a career-high 11 rebounds in the win while Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) drained three 3-pointers en
route to 13 points. Glaser, who played only three first-half minutes after taking
two quick fouls, finished with six.
Danny Nawrocki led
four Blue Jays in double figures with 16 points, going 7-of-9 from the floor.
Terrence Coppola drained four of
Johns Hopkins' eight 3-pointers on the night, finishing with 14 points.
 Battling a program
with exactly three home losses in the past three seasons, the Bullets nonetheless
prevailed to remain the CC's top road team.
Back-to-back threes from Coppola turned a five-point
Gettysburg advantage into
a 55-54 Blue Jay lead with 3:34 remaining, the hosts' final lead of the contest.
Spadafora missed a 3-pointer on the Bullets' next possession,
but Fromm chased down the offensive rebound, then finished
the play with his third 3-pointer of the night to put Gettysburg ahead 57-55.
A free throw and layup by Nawrocki kept JHU within 59-58. A turnover gave the Blue Jays
the ball back, but T.J. Valerio missed a 3-pointer and Spadafora
finished a layup with 41 seconds left for a 3-point
lead.
Fromm forced a turnover on Johns Hopkins' next trip and Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester
Acad. [MA]) hit two free throws with 21 seconds left to seal the win.
With Glaser on the bench for most of the first half,
Fromm, Spadafora and Jakobe picked up the scoring slack and kept the Bullets in
the game.
Gettysburg fell behind 8-3 in the game's first four minutes
before reeling off 10 straight points to take a 13-8 lead. Johns Hopkins answered
with a 10-0 burst of its own to go on top 20-15 following a Nawrocki layup.
The Blue Jays took their largest lead of the night at
31-25 on a 3-pointer by Eric Toback, but Fromm hit a
layup with 22 seconds left to keep the Bullets within four
at the break.
Valerio finished with 12 points and Toback
added 10 for Johns Hopkins.
Gettysburg finished up its CC road schedule with a 7-2 mark. The
Bullets final two games are at Bream Gym, including a Saturday matchup with Swarthmore. Game time is 2 p.m.
