GETTYSBURG, Pa. David Glaser (West
Chester, PA/Malvern Prep)
poured in a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds to propel Gettysburg to a 79-50 victory
over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) mens basketball action on
Saturday.After
starting the day 1-for-5, Glaser connected on his final seven shots of the contest
to lead the Bullets (15-9, 12-5 CC) to their third straight victory. On senior
day for Gettysburg, the four Bullet
seniors combined for 42 of the squads points.
Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) contributed
12 points while Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) and John Pelin (Brockport,
NY/Brockport) added eight and three, respectively.
The
freshmen duo of Spencer Gray and Ian McCormick led the Garnet (4-20,
3-14 CC) with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Starting
the day 1-for-8 from the floor as a team, the Bullets found themselves in an 8-3
hole with 15:42 to play.
A
Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) layup-and-foul
at the 15:32 mark touched off a 13-0 burst over a 3-minute, 47-second span.
Glaser
connected on the next six points in the run and Whelan capped off the stretch
by going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to open a 16-8 edge.
Mark Rhode
snapped the run with a mid-range jumper, but Glaser nailed his only 3-pointer
of the game and Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) hit a layup
on the next two Gettysburg
possessions to stretch the lead to double digits for the first time.
Steve Wolf
layed in a fourth-chance basket to cut the Swarthmore
deficit to 26-16 with 5:06 to play in the opening stanza before the Bullet seniors
combined for 10 of the next 12 points for a 38-18 lead, capped by Pelins lone trey of the game with 56 seconds showing.
Wolf
hit a jumper to close the halftime margin to 38-20.
Glaser,
Jakobe and Pombar knocked
down shots on the Bullets first three possessions of the second half to
quickly stretch the lead to 45-22 with 18:29 to play.
After
a Dillon McGrew triple trimmed the deficit to 47-27, Gettysburg reeled off 10
straight points for its first 30-point advantage in the game.
The
lead grew to as many as 34 when Matt
Presby (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) hit a layup for his first collegiate points to make it a 72-38 game
with 4:01 to play.
The
Bullets held Matt Gustafson, the CCs leading
scorer and Swarthmores all-time leading scorer, to no points for the first
time since Jan. 22, 2003 against Ursinus.
Sateja added a career-high eight rebounds for Gettysburg, which kept pace
with Ursinus for the second spot in the CC standings. The Bears defeated Johns
Hopkins 80-77 in overtime.
The
Bullets finish the regular season on Tuesday at home against Dickinson.
