Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown,
MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) led four players in double figures with 26 points
as Gettysburg took a big step toward the Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs with
an 82-69 win over Swarthmore on Saturday. Jen
Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) posted her sixth double-double
of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Bullets (13-11, 10-7 CC),
who would clinch their first playoff berth in eight years with a win over Dickinson
on Tuesday or a Franklin & Marshall loss to Johns Hopkins.
One game after becoming Gettysburg’s ninth 1,000-point
scorer, Ross connected on 10 of 15 shots, coming within two points of her career
high of 28. Fellow senior Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs)
also keyed the win with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Karen Berk scored a team-high 15 points for
the Garnet (14-10, 10-7 CC), who never led. Debra Farrelly went
4-for-4 from both the field and the free throw line to finish with 13.
Needing a win to stay ahead in the playoff chase, the Bullets
went wire-to-wire on Saturday.
Falk
opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood)
hit two free throws to stake the hosts to a 5-0 lead. Bengel netted her first
nine points in a five-minute span to make it 16-9 before Swarthmore pulled within
20-16 on a Farrelly jumper.
Jamie
Marshall’s (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) layup gave Gettysburg its
first double-digit lead of the day at 27-17 and a jumper by Reilly pushed the
advantage to 35-23 with 2:51 left in the half.
The
Garnet crept within 46-39 early in the second half before the Bullets turned on
the jets with a 10-0 run. Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley)
split two defenders for a transition layup to start the burst and Bengel followed
with a jumper. Ross then tossed in three straight baskets to make it 56-39 with
13:00 left.
Swarthmore got
within 11 on two occasions, the latter coming with 7:28 remaining, but could get
no closer down the stretch.
Ross
and Bengel scored 20 points apiece for the third time this season and second consecutive
Saturday. Reilly finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Gettysburg out-rebounded
the Garnet, 45-30.
Swarthmore
leading scorer Radiance Walters managed 10 points and three rebounds,
despite a first-half injury that limited her to 14 minutes. Jessica Fuhr
added nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
The
Bullets wrap up their regular season on Tuesday at home against 22nd-ranked Dickinson.
