Ursinus solidifies playoff position with 69-64 win at Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mike McGarvey scored a game-high 21 points, including the go-ahead basket with 8:57 remaining, to lift Ursinus over Gettysburg 69-64 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.

McGarvey, the conference’s assists and steals leader, added four assists and three steals in 40 minutes of action, helping the Bears (12-9, 9-5 CC) avenge an earlier home loss to the Bullets (12-9, 9-5 CC) and move into a fourth-place tie with Gettysburg in the CC standings. McGarvey hit 7 of 12 shots, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range.

Will Furey added 15 points and Matt Fabian pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds as Ursinus won for just the second time in its last 19 trips to Gettysburg. The rare road win, coupled with Washington’s 88-85 loss at Haverford, gave the Bears a three-game lead for the CC’s final playoff spot with four games remaining.

Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) led the Bullets with 20 points, two shy of his season high. David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) added 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as Gettysburg fell to 5-5 at home this season.

After 31 back-and-forth minutes that featured 10 lead changes, the Bears used a late surge to take a big step toward the postseason.

Todd Brady’s (Hancock, NH/ConVal) foot-on-the-line jumper gave the Bullets’ their last lead of the night at 48-47 before Ursinus went to work.

McGarvey scored off an assist from Joe Scholz to put the Bears ahead to stay. Following Gettysburg turnovers on back-to-back possessions, Scholz hit a quick jumper off an inbounds feed from McGarvey to make it 51-48 with 8:02 remaining.

Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) answered with a driving layup, but the Bullets went without a field goal for the next 3 minutes, 52 seconds.

Ursinus took advantage of the drought with an 8-2 run, started by a Nick Shattuck put-back and capped by a leaning transition layup from Brian McEvily, giving the Bears a 59-52 lead with 4:48 left. Shattuck hit 1 of 2 free throws, pushing the lead to 62-54 with 2:02 remaining.

Jakobe knocked down the last of his 3-pointers to give Gettysburg life at 64-60 with 1:03 left.

The Bears, however, ran 25 seconds off the game clock on their next possession before McGarvey hit two free throws to make it 66-60. A breakaway layup by McEvily and a free throw from Tim Smith with 2.4 ticks left sealed the win.

Behind 12 points from McGarvey, Ursinus went 13-for-25 from the floor in the first half to take a 35-31 lead into the locker room. A transition 3-pointer by McEvily with 7:22 left before halftime made it 24-22, putting the Bears ahead until the opening minutes of the second half.

The Bullets converted 10 of a season-high 28 3-pointers on the night, hitting only 4 of 15 in the second half. Whelan finished with 13 points, his ninth double-digit performance in the past 13 games.

 McEvily added 11 for Ursinus.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Washington (Md.). Game time is 4 p.m.
