Box Score
GETTYSBURG,
Pa. – Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) recorded
14 saves as seventh-ranked Gettysburg allowed only one second-half goal in a 6-4
non-conference men’s lacrosse win over Denison on Saturday.
Vaughan, a preseason All-America honorable mention, made
six of his stops in the third quarter, keeping the Big Red (1-1) off the board
and helping the Bullets (1-1) stay ahead en route to their first victory of the
year. Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and Jon Sowanick
(Bethesda, MD/Bullis) led the Gettysburg offense with two goals apiece.
Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) and Chase
Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) each added one goal and one assist
in the win.
P.J. Hendrick
scored twice for Denison, who was facing the Bullets for the first time since
the 2001 national semifinals.
Chris
Boehl put the Big Red ahead 1-0 midway through the first quarter, but
his bid to make it 2-0 was stopped by Vaughan and Harriman scored moments later
to tie the game at 1.
Pryor’s
finish off a behind-the-net feed from Stewart put Gettysburg ahead 2-1 with 27.6
seconds left in the first quarter. Sowanick struck with 8:17 left in the half
for a 3-1 lead, but Denison got an even-strength goal from Hendrick and a man-up
tally from Tom Moschos in a span of 2 minutes, 46 seconds to knot
the game at 3.
Vaughan kept
the game even with a stop on Clay Wawner and the Bullets turned
a late timeout into a Harriman goal with 33 seconds left in the half, going ahead
to stay at 4-3.
After halftime,
Vaughan and the Gettysburg defense made sure the home team maintained its lead.
The Bullets killed back-to-back, 30-second man-down situations
before Stewart finished an unassisted run for a crucial two-goal lead with 8:22
left in the third. Vaughan recorded four more saves through the remainer of the
period, including stops in rapid succession on Wawner, Rick Mackessy
and Ted Douglass.
Sowanick
provided a key insurance goal, lasering a shot past Big Red goalie Alex
Baruch to make it 6-3 with 9:59 remaining. Gettysburg kept Denison off
the board until the game’s final 67 seconds, when Hendrick finished a solo move
to snap his squad’s 32-minute, 41-second scoring drought.
On the ensuing face-off, Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport)
posted the last of his seven face-off wins and the Bullets were able to run out
the clock. Renzi finished 7-for-11 at the “X” and also recorded a team-high seven
ground balls.
Gettysburg returns
to action on Wednesday at home against Susquehanna. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
