WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joseph Beneditti went 2-for-4 in each half of a doubleheader to lift Catholic to a sweep over Gettysburg by identical 7-5 scores in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) went a combined 3-for-7 on the day with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored to lead the Bullets (2-4), who were swept for the second time in three doubleheaders this season.
In games that were carbon copies of each other, the Cardinals (5-7) used a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break 5-all deadlocks and record the victories.
In game one, Adam Spisak reached on an error to lead off the frame. Michael Michalski followed with an RBI single and later scored on a one-out double by Joseph Verga.
Trailing 5-3 entering the sixth, Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abbey School) and Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) drew back-to-back walks to lead off the Gettysburg half of the inning and chase Catholic starter Joseph Voiro.
Michael Schmidt came on in relief and got one out before Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) reached on a strikeout-passed ball.
Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) singled to drive home the tying run before Schmidt got an inning-ending double play to avoid further damage.
The Cardinals jumped on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead on a Jason Funk home run.
The Bullets answered with a pair of runs in top of the second to take the lead.
Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) led off with a single and Donohue drew a one-out walk to put two runners on.
Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) reached on a fielder's choice, but an errant throw on the attempt for the double play allowed Carey to score and knot the game at 1.
Freeburger followed with an RBI single to give Gettysburg the lead.
Three straight singles and an infield groundout led to three runs for Catholic in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 advantage.
The teams traded runs in the fifth to set up the pivotal sixth.
In the nightcap, Andrew Carnevale and Robert Soler led off with back-to-back singles to start the home sixth.
Pedro Rivera was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Verga drew a one-out walk to force home the go-ahead run and a Funk hit-by-pitch plated Soler to set the final margin.
In the top of the frame, four walks and a hit batsman led to three Bullet runs that tied the contest at 5-all.
Gettysburg jumped on the board in the top of the first.
Ball got things started with a one-out single before scoring on a Bonyai triple. Bonyai then came down the line on a single by Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) for a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, a lead-off walk led to three runs for a 3-2 Cardinal advantage.
Catholic added two more runs, plating a pair in the bottom of the third when Verga and Funk led off the frame with a walk and hit by pitch, respectively.
Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) picked up his second loss of the young season in the opener for Gettysburg while Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) went the distance in game two for the loss.
Peter Doyle notched his initial win of the season for the Cardinals in game one while Schmidt recorded the win in an inning and a third of relief in the nightcap.
The Bullets return to action in a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon on Sunday. The first game begins at 12 p.m.
