Box Score

YORK, Pa.Jeff Moore led a 19-hit attack with a 5-for-6 day from the plate to lift York (Pa.) to a 13-6 win over Gettysburg in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.

Moore added three RBIs and scored two runs of his own for the Spartans (9-3), who sent at least eight batters to the plate in three innings.

Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) went 3-for-4 for the Bullets (3-6) and added an RBI and double.

Moore led off the York third with a high pop-up in shallow left that fell in for a double. After Moore moved up a base on a deep line drive to right field, Justin Kaplan was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners.

A Jeff Young double off the wall in left-center scored Moore to break a 4-all deadlock and put runners at second and third.

After PJ Valenza drew one of 10 Spartan walks to load the bases, Justin Heller flew out to center to score Kaplan on the sacrifice to give York a 6-4 advantage.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Gettysburg got one back to close to within 5-4.

Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) recorded an infield single and Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) got the benefit of an error to put runners at first and second.

Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) kept the rally going with a single into right-center to score Campo, but Scott Day got his 12th groundout in the first four innings to prevent any further damage.

Ashley Swope led off the bottom of the fourth with his first home run of the season to spark a four-run inning, taking Kenny Stone (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic) deep over the right-field wall and leading to a 10-5 Spartan edge.

Kaplan and Heller had two of York's eight doubles in the frame.

Back-to-back hit batsmen with one out in the top of the sixth led to an unearned run for the Bullets.

Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) and Campo were each hit by Day before a Carey fly out moved Freeburger to third with two away.

A throwing error on the catcher on the return toss allowed Freeburger to come down the line and cut the deficit to 10-6.

York tacked on a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth to set the final margin.

Gettysburg got things started early on, recording back-to-back doubles with two out in the first.

Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) ripped a double to straightaway center and Bonyai went down the right-field line to score Donohue for a 1-0 lead.

Heller drew a leadoff walk for the Spartans but Bullet starter Paul Couture (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), in his first collegiate action, got a double-play ball to get two out.

The next six batters reached before a fourth walk in the frame chased Couture to give way to Stone.

Stone surrendered a bases-loaded walk to the ninth hitter of the frame that pushed the York advantage to 4-1 before getting Heller to line out to left.

With one out in the second, Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) notched an infield single.

Freeburger followed with a single to center and Campo was hit by a pitch to load the bags.

Carey doubled home Pernice and Freeburger and a Ball RBI groundout pulled Gettysburg back to even at 4.

Stone picked up the loss for the Bullets, pitching 5 1/3 innings, recording five strikeouts.

Day went six innings for the Spartans, getting 13 of his outs on the ground to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Kaplan and Andy Puglisi tallied three hits and two runs scored on the day for York. Kaplan also added a pair of RBIs.

Gettysburg returns to action in a doubleheader against Middlebury at Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday in the start of their 10-game Florida trip. The first game begins at 12:30 p.m.
