GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) claimed her first season victory in game one and Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) went four-for-four in the game two as Gettysburg won one and tied another against Elizabethtown in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.
The Bullets (1-0-1) opened the season with a 13-3 victory in game one, but lost a five run lead to tie with the Blue Jays (0-8-1) in game two.
Gettysburg jumped off to a 5-0 lead after Kiry held Elizabethtown to a three and out in the top of the first inning. Blue Jay pitcher Alex Lee opened the bottom half of the inning by walking Pareso, then giving up singles to Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) and Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves).
With the bases load and no outs, Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) walked to send Pareso home and put the Bullets on the board.
Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) then nailed a single to centerfield, scoring Pilarcik, but then all three base runners advanced on a Blue Jay error to score Gale and Gutermuth and bring Miller to third.
Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) grounded out to third, but brought Miller home to put the Bullets up 5-0 at the end of the first.
Gettysburg had another five-run inning in the third, powered by a triple from Pilarcik and a double from Eiden.
Kiry pitched four innings, giving up three hits, one run and striking out four batters.
The Bullets finished game one with 10 hits while Elizabethtown tallied seven.
In game two of the doubleheader, Gettysburg jumped off to a 3-0 lead in similar fashion, nailing four hits in the second inning. Miller, Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Pareso all singled and Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) triple to give the Bullets a 3-0 advantage.
But the Blue Jays capitalized in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on two hits to tie the score at 6-all. Megan Ottey lead off with a walk for Elizabethtown then advanced to second on a passed ball. Megan Balmer collected her second hit of the day, drilling a base hit to left field and scoring Ottey.
Katie Heffner hit a single to drive Diana Aria, who got on base by a walk, home. Ottey was then hit by a pitch, sending the tying run across the plate.
The Bullets held the Blue Jays in the 6th and 7th innings, but could not convert on offense. The game did not go into extra innings due to darkness.
Pareso pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, six runs and struck out two. Elizabethtown's Tanya Konek pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits, six runs with one strikeout.
The Bullets will next be in action at the Snowball Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. They meet West Virginia State and Tompkins Cortland Community College on Monday.
