Gettysburg falls at Hampden-Sydney, 11-7

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Thomas Jennings scored a game-high four goals and Sean McChesney added four points as Hampden-Sydney defeated sixth-ranked Gettysburg 11-7 in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Jennings scored three times during a 6-1 first-half run that turned the Tigers’ early 3-0 deficit into a 6-4 halftime lead. Hampden-Sydney (3-2) never trailed after McChesney netted the first of his two goals with 2:35 left in the first half, posting its third win in 13 meetings with the Bullets (2-2).

Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) led Gettysburg with his third hat trick in four games this season. Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) added one goal and one assist.

After close losses to Centennial Conference opponents Haverford and Washington, the Tigers gained a measure of revenge against the CC’s defending champion.

With his team down 3-0 late in the first quarter, Jennings scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 50 seconds, touching off a 6-1 run to the end of the half.

Michael Via knotted the game at 3 off a feed from Colin Dunn. Bullet defenseman Matt Smith (Quakertown, PA/Germantown Acad.) temporarily halted the hosts’ momentum with his first goal of the season, but Hampden-Sydney struck three more times before the intermission.

Via set up Eamon Thornton to tie the game at 4 and McChesney put the Tigers ahead to stay off a feed from Ryan Harrington with 2:35 remaining. Jennings completed his hat trick on the final possession of the half, scoring with four ticks left to give Hampden-Sydney a 6-4 halftime lead.

Stewart tallied an unassisted goal out of halftime to pull Gettysburg within one, but McChesney answered with a goal and an assist on William Shell’s marker to make it 8-5. Stewart cut the deficit to 8-6, but goals from Vince Smith and Jennings, combined with three saves by Tiger goalie Jeremy Bull, extended the margin to four with 12:26 left.

The Bullets got off to a promising start, scoring three times in the first 9 minutes, 9 seconds to build an early lead. Pryor needed 66 seconds to make it 1-0 and Stewart followed midway through the quarter to make it 2-0.

Pryor set up Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) for a 3-0 Gettysburg lead with 5:51 left in the quarter, but Hampden-Sydney responded by outscoring the Bullets 11-4 the rest of the way.

Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) also scored for Gettysburg while Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) made 10 saves.

Thornton finished with two goals and one assist for Hampden-Sydney, which was hosting the Bullets for the first time since 1999. Bull recorded eight saves in the win.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against third-ranked Middlebury. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
