Box Scores – Game One | Game Two
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Allegheny College got two complete games from its pitchers and more than enough offense to sweep a doubleheader from Gettysburg in non-conference baseball action on Sunday.
The Gators (2-0) opened their 2005 schedule with an 11-5 victory in the opener at Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey, Fla., and then picked up a 7-3 win over the Bullets (4-9) in the nightcap.
Jon Schmitt went the distance for Allegheny in game one, giving up nine hits and striking out three. Chris Squeglia notched the complete game in the nightcap, allowing seven hits and recording seven strikeouts.
Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the opener for Gettysburg, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead before surrendering innings of five and four runs.
With one out in the top of the first inning, Austin Ball (Farmindale, NY/Hills East) was the first of nine combined hit batsman by both teams in both games.
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) followed with a single down the right-field line to put runners at the corners, and Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) drew the only walk issued by Schmitt to load the bases.
A Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) sacrifice fly drove home Ball, and Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) grabbed his first hit of the season – a double to the gap in left-center to clear the bases for a 3-0 advantage.
Freeburger doubled home McDonald to make it a 4-0 game.
After pitching around leadoff hits in both of the first two innings, Bullet starter Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) gave up a leadoff single down the left-field line to Jason Pape.
Dan Ayer reached on the first of two Gettysburg errors in the opener before back-to-back RBI singles pulled the Gators to within 4-2.
After a groundout put runners at second and third with one down, Tyler Lowry singled and Dirk Bonessa tripled to give Allegheny a 5-4 lead and force a pitching change.
Greg Urich (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) came on in relief to get the final out of the inning.
Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) doubled home Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville), who reached on a double to the center-field fence one batter earlier, with two out in the fourth to pull the Bullets back even at 5.
After Pape led off the bottom half of the frame with a single and stole second, Ayer doubled into left to score Pape and start a four-run inning that put the Gators up to stay at 9-5.
Allegheny tacked on a pair in the bottom of the fifth that started when Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic) relieved Kenny Stone (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic) with one out and the bases loaded.
Koch immediately recorded one of three Gettysburg hit by pitches to force home a run before another sacrifice fly set the final margin.
In the nightcap, back-to-back singles to lead off the Allegheny fourth chased Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) in favor of Pat Flynn (New York, NY/Poly Prep Country Day).
A throwing error got the scoring started, allowing Lowry to score from third.
After Pape drew a one-out walk, Ayer singled to left-center, driving home the second Gator run of the frame. Flynn worked out of trouble, getting a groundout and strikeout to end the inning.
Jimmy McNamara (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) recorded an infield single with one away and Dylan Reilly (Athens, PA/Athens) walked to put runners and first and second.
After a strikeout, Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was hit by a pitch to lead the bases.
A high chopper by Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) to second base allowed him to reach with a single, but a throwing error allowed Reilly to also come in to score and knot the game at 2.
Back-to-back errors to start the fifth started a four-run frame that saw four unearned runs come across the plate, including one on consecutive balks by Flynn.
Gettysburg added one run in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of a McNamara RBI single to right, but Allegheny got that run right back in the top of the sixth to set the final margin.
McNamara had the only two-hit day in game two, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Urich picked up the loss for the Bullets in the opener while Flynn got tagged for the loss in the nightcap.
Gettysburg returns to action against Williams at the N.Y. Yankees Complex in Tampa, Fla., on Monday. Game time is 12:30 p.m.
