MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) went 4-for-7 with two triples, three RBIs and three runs scored to help Gettysburg defeat Scranton 8-0 and Frostburg State 8-1 in non-conference softball action at the Snowbird Invitational on Thursday.
Shannon Kiry (Cinnamison, NJ/Cinnamison) picked up her third win of the season with a five-hit, two-hit shutout against Scranton in the opener as the Bullets (6-1-1) improved to 5-1 during their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach.
Gettysburg took control of game one with four runs in the first inning.
Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) advanced lead-off batter Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) to second with a sacrifice bunt, after Pareso reached on an error.
Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) walked and both base runners advanced on a passed ball, giving Gutermuth runners at second and third.
Gutermuth singled to left center field, driving Pareso home and putting Gale in scoring position.
Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) followed with her fourth triple of the week, scoring Gale and Gutermuth and giving the Bullets a 4-0 advantage after one inning.
Gettysburg scored three more runs in the second off a two-RBI double from Gale and a single from Gutermuth, who also scored the Bullets' eighth run in the fifth after nailing a triple down the left field line.
Sagaities went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored.
Gettysburg collected 10 hits and allowed one run to defeat Frostburg State 8-1 in game two.
Meghan Howlett (Millsboro, DE/Milford) pitched all seven innings to record four strikeouts and her second victory of the season.
In familiar fashion, the Bullets gained an early lead, scoring three of their first four batters.
Pareso walked and was advanced to second on a Pilarcik bunt. Gale walked to again give Gutermuth batters at first and third.
Gutermuth responded with a triple to center field, scoring Pareso and Gale. Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) then nailed a base hit to right field to score Gale and the Bullets closed the first inning with a 3-0 advantage.
With two outs in the second inning, Pareso and Pilarcik each singled before scoring on a Gale triple. After two scoreless innings, Sagaities ripped her second home run of the trip out to deep center field to bring in two more runs, and Gettysburg held a 7-0 lead at the end of the fifth inning.
In the sixth, Pilarcik ripped a triple to score Pareso, who had reached base with a leadoff single.
The Bullets will take on Avila University and Alverno College in the final day of Snowbird action. Game times are 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
