Franklin & Marshall ends Gettysburg’s CC winning streak, 8-7

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Catherine Onnen and Kiki Foster collected two goals and two assists apiece to lead 17th-ranked Franklin & Marshall past No. 8 Gettysburg 8-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Onnen’s second goal snapped a 6-all tie with 8:12 remaining and put the Diplomats (3-2, 2-0 CC) ahead to stay, ending the Bullets’ record 30-game CC winning streak. Gettysburg’s last conference loss before Wednesday was a 16-11 set-back to Ursinus on Mar. 23, 2002.

Franklin & Marshall also halted a nine-game losing streak to the Bullets (6-2, 2-1 CC), posting its first win in the series since 1999. In addition, the Diplomats avenged CC championship-game losses to Gettysburg in 2003 and 2004.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) led the Bullets with a goal and two assistswhile Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) added one goal and one assist. Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) also netted one goal, the 100th of her collegiate career.

With timely offense and eight saves from goalie Kamissa Mort, F&M handed Gettysburg only its third conference loss in six seasons.

After Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) tied the game at 6 with 20:33 left, the teams battled without a goal for more than 12 nail-biting minutes before the Diplomats broke though.

Foster started the play on the go-ahead goal, feeding a transition pass to Onnen, who fired a shot past Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) to make it 7-6 with 8:12 remaining.

Abby Kaplan won the ensuing draw control for F&M and Brenna Dolphin capped a long Diplomat possession with a key insurance goal at 54:07, scoring off a feed from Alexis O’Meara.

Gettysburg kept its hopes alive in the final minute when Delauney drew a foul inside the 8-meter fan and converted the free-position shot to pull the Bullets within 8-7 with 21 seconds left.

The Bullets pushed into F&M territory after a clean win on the ensuing draw control, but failed to get a shot away as time expired.

The Diplomats scored twice in the game’s first five minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead, but Lowe scored at 7:32 and set up Dougherty at 13:51 to knot the contest. Foster finished a solo run at 18:52 before Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) and Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) scored back-to-back goals in a span of 2 minutes, 1 second to give the Bullets their first lead at 4-3.

The Diplomats answered with goals from O’Meara and Foster in a 53-second stretch to go back on top. Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) pulled Gettysburg even at the break on an unassisted goal with 23 second left in the half.

Eileen Keever and Shihadeh traded goals to make it 6-6, setting the stage for F&M’s game-winning surge.

Laurie Goon (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) led the Bullets with six draw controls and also picked up four ground balls. Hagan took a game-high seven shots.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Washington. Game time is 1 p.m.
