Gettysburg opens 2005 season with 11-8 win over St. Mary’s

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) scored a team-high four goals and Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) added two goals and two assists to lead 14th-ranked Gettysburg over No. 11 St. Mary’s (Md.) 11-8 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Delauney, who scored a team-best 53 goals a year ago, opened the 2005 campaign in similar fashion to help the Bullets (1-0) win their fifth consecutive season opener. In addition, the four-goal performance moved Delauney within three points of 100 for her collegiate career.

Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) added two goals for Gettysburg, which won its third consecutive meeting with the Seahawks (2-1), squaring the all-time series at 3-3. Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) recorded nine saves in her debut as the Bullets’ starting goalie.

Allyson Sarigianis posted a hat trick in the game’s first 16 minutes for St. Mary’s, finishing with a team-high four goals. Sarah Sloane chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Playing for the first time on the artificial turf of Clark Field, Gettysburg christened its new home in style.

The Bullets fell behind after a Sarigianis goal on the Seahawks’ second possession of the game before rattling off the next three goals.

Gettysburg didn’t trail again after freshman Cristi Farrell (Broomall, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame) fed Zappacosta to knot the game at 1. Lowe finished a solo run 59 seconds later and Delauney struck for an unassisted goal to make it 3-1.

Sarigianis tied the game at 3 with two goals in a span of 1 minute, 39 seconds. On the Bullets’ next possession, Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) hit the crossbar with a shot, but Lowe picked up the loose ball and set up Delauney’s second goal, putting Gettysburg ahead for good at 4-3 with 11:42 left in the half.

St. Mary’s pulled within a goal on three occasions, but was unable to get even.

Delauney’s third goal of the game restored the Bullets’ two-goal lead after the Seahawks had crept within 7-6. Her fourth tally made it 9-7 with 8:23 left, touching off a three-goal flurry that sealed the win.

After recording a single save in the first half, Kelley made eight stops after halftime to preserve her second collegiate victory. The junior’s biggest save came on Sloane with 9:52 remaining to maintain Gettysburg’s 8-7 lead.

Farrell and freshman Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) made an immediate impact on the Bullets’ draw control performance. Ceglarski won a game-high six draw controls and Farrell added three, helping Gettysburg post a 15-6 advantage for the game.

Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) and Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) chipped in with one goal and one assist apiece for the Bullets. Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) also scored in the win.

Sloane won four draw controls for the Seahawks and also recorded three of the team’s 13 caused turnovers. Goalie Melissa Puzak finished with eight saves.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against 16th-ranked Mary Washington. Game time is 4 p.m.
