Gettysburg falls to Washington and Lee in 2005 opener, 9-8

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Jack Murray netted four goals and added an assist to lead No. 8-ranked Washington and Lee to a 9-8 victory over Gettysburg in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Murray found the back of the net twice in the first and third quarters to help the Generals (2-0) keep a surging Bullet attack at bay and avenge last year’s 6-2 loss. The loss was the first for Gettysburg (0-1) in its opener since 1996.

Preseason first-team All-American Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) collected a hat trick for the Bullets.

Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) put Gettysburg on the board first for their only lead of the game, scoring off a Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis School) pass just over two minutes into the first quarter.

Adam Chesbrough quickly retaliated, netting an unassisted goal after winning the face-off just six seconds after the Renzi goal, initiating a 4-1 run over the rest of the first quarter.

After a goal by Pat Collins and two from Murray, Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) pulled the Bullets within 5-2, heading into the second quarter.

Ned Rider opened the second quarter with a goal, but two of Stewart’s goals and a tally from Sowanick evened the score at 5-5 by halftime.

Murray converted for his third goal just 19 second after the break, then Stewart tied the score at 10:39, completing his hat trick.

Alex Platia scored on his own with 4:17 left in the third quarter, giving W&L a lead that it would never relinquish.

Goals from Gavin Molinelli and Murray gave the Generals a 9-6 advantage going into the fourth.

Despite goals from T.J. Liberto (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s) and Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth), the Bullets fell short at the end of regulation.
 Gettysburg outshot W&L, 48-28.

Chris Lalli recorded a game-high 15 saves for the Generals while Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) made five stops for the Bullets.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Denison. Game time is 1 p.m.
