Box Scores – Game One | Game Two
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Ray Moore drove in the game-winning run of the opening game of a doubleheader to lift Mary Washington to the first half of a sweep against Gettysburg in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.
The Eagles (4-3) came from behind in both games, winning 2-1 in the opener and 6-2 in the nightcap.
The Bullets (0-2) got a complete game in the first game from senior Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) in their opener. Borman pitched all six innings, recording six strikeouts.
Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) got the starting nod for Gettysburg in game two, lasting 5 1/3 innings, allowing all six runs while striking out three.
Kevin Foeman went the distance for Mary Washington in game one, allowing just two hits.
Dylan White recorded nine strikeouts for the Eagles in six inning of work in game two.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Moore knocked home the game-winning run with a double to the gap in left-center in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-all tie.
Brandon Cole reached on a fielder's choice and scored on the two-out hit by Moore to give Mary Washington the 2-1 lead. A 1-2-3 top of the seventh, including his ninth and final strikeout of the game, preserved the win.
The Bullets struck first when Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) scored on a Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) double.
With one out in the top of the fourth, McNamara drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on the Straub knock into the outfield gap.
With one out in the fifth, Justin Marsh drew a walk and stole second. After Borman recorded his sixth strikeout of the game, Marsh advanced to third on the lone Gettysburg error of the game.
With two away, Eric Fitzgerald ripped a double into left to score Marsh and knot the game at 1.
Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) tallied the only other hit of the opener for the Bullets.
In the night cap, Gettysburg once again struck first, plating single runs in the top of the second and third for a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) reached on a walk and stole second. After a strikeout, McNamara reached on an error to put runners at the corners with two away. A Straub single scored McNamara for the 1-0 lead, but a fly out and strikeout ended the threat of any more damage.
With two out in the third, Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) and Bonyai recorded back-to-back singles to give the Bullets a 2-0 advantage.
Fitzgerald got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth, drawing a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
A RBI groundout from Tom McDermott cut the deficit in half.
Three walks, two sacrifice hits and a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fifth led to a four-run inning to give Mary Washington a 5-2 lead.
With one out in the sixth, Lee Rubin connected for a double before giving way to pinch-runner Tim Stoner, who stole third and scored on a Cole single.
Gettysburg had its chance in the seventh. After back-to-back strikeouts to lead off the inning, Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) started the two-out rally with a single.
Ball and Pernice drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, but Steve Grodek got out of trouble with his third strikeout of the inning.
The Bullets return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at St. Mary's (Md.). The first game begins at 11 a.m.
