Box Scores – Game One | Game Two

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) went 4-for-8 with two doubles and scored three runs to lift Gettysburg to a doubleheader sweep at St. Mary's (Md.) in non-conference baseball action on Sunday.

Straub was part of a big fifth inning for the Bullets (2-2) in the opener that led directly to a 2-1 victory and rapped out Gettysburg's first multiple-hit game of the young season in an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.

Luther Snow had two of the four hits for the Seahawks (5-3) in game one while Andrew Sohn and Chris Segal had two hits apiece in game two.

In the opener, St. Mary's struck first, plating its lone run in the bottom of the third.

Pat Dunty led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Kevin Meyer sacrifice put Dunty at third with one out.

Matt Engelau reached on a throwing error, allowing Dunty to score for a 1-0 lead.

Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) led off the Bullet fifth with a double down the right-field line before Straub followed with a double of his own to left to put runners at second and third.

A Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abby School) walk loaded the bases.

Carey scored on a Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) groundout, and a throwing error allowed Straub to follow him in for the 2-1 lead.

Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) went the distance on the hill for Gettysburg, recording six strikeouts to pick up the initial win of the season.

Brian Briggs got the start for the Seahawks, lasting 5 2/3 innings and striking out three.

In the nightcap, Donohue got things started with a one-out single to right-center in the top of the second. Courtesy runner Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout before scoring on Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) single to right.

Straub made it 2-0, leading off the fourth with a double and scoring on Sweeney sacrifice fly.

The Bullets pushed the advantage to 4-0, taking advantage of two St. Mary's errors in the top of the sixth to plate two unearned runs.

Back-to-back singles from Travis Herrick and Segal in the bottom of the inning started a rally to pull the Seahawks within 4-2.

Herrick got St. Mary's on the board, scoring from third on a John Spinnenweber groundout. One batter later, Segal came down the line on a Zach Adams single to left.

Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) reached on a fielding error to lead off the Gettysburg seventh before scoring on a Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) triple.

After Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners with nobody gone, Straub singled to left to score Bonyai.

Donohue walked and stole second to put runners at second and third with two out before a Matt Stilitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) singled to the gap in right-center to clear the bases and give the Bullets an 8-2 advantage.

The Seahawks got one back in the bottom half of the inning to set the final margin.

Engelau drew a one-out walk and scored on a Sohn double.

Ross Hempel (Marriotsville, MD/Glenelg) went the distance for Gettysburg, recording the Bullets' third complete game in four outings. He notched a pair of strikeouts and one walk in the win.

Ryan D'Antuono got the starting nod for St. Mary's, lasting five innings. He allowed five hits while striking out three to pick up the loss.

Bonyai and Donohue also recorded two hits apiece for the Bullets in game two.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at Shenandoah. Game time is 3 p.m.
