Box Score
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead an offensive attack in Gettysburg's 13-2 Centennial Conference (CC) victory at McDaniel in baseball action on Friday.
Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) pitched the first seven innings for the Bullets (9-11, 2-0 CC), recording five strikeouts and allowing just one earned run to even his record at 2-2.
Jimmy Dahlgren led the Green Terror (3-6, 0-2 CC), going 2-for-4 day with a home run.
Behind four multiple-hit and three multiple-RBI outings, Gettysburg recorded season highs in runs, hits and RBIs.
With one out in the first, Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) started the onslaught, reaching second on an error.
Bonyai followed with an RBI single to plate Ball – the first of four times he came around to score – and stake the Bullets to a 1-0 advantage.
Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) led off the visitor's third, reaching on a two-base error, to start the first of two four-run frames.
Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) singled to put runners and the corners and Ball was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bonyai, who doubled home Campo and McNamara for a 3-0 lead.
Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) singled to score Ball and Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) laced a base hit into left to plate Bonyai, putting Gettysburg on top, 5-0.
McDaniel cracked the scoreboard when Dalgren hit his second roundtripper of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth and pull the Green Terror within 5-1.
The Bullet offense went right back to work in the top of the fifth, plating three more runs.
Pernice led off with a single before Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) drew a one-out walk. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored on a Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) double.
After giving up eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, Tyler Stewart gave way to Dan Coons, who immediately gave up a double to Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) that scored Olson and gave the Bullets an 8-1 advantage.
Gettysburg grabbed four more runs on three singles and two walk in the seventh.
After the first four Bullets reached to start the frame and with two runs already home, Erich Wolf came on in relief of Coons and allowed the next three to reach, plating the other two Gettysburg tallies.
With McDaniel trailing 12-1 after the stretch, Pat Green reached on an error and Tom Wenrich was hit by a pitch. A Scott Deitrich infield single loaded the bases for Chad Keller, who flew out to left for the sacrifice to plate Green.
Gettysburg tacked on a single run in the ninth thanks to a leadoff single by Ball and the final two of five Green Terror errors.
Ball, Pernice and Donohue all notched two-hit performances for the Bullets, accounting for nearly half of the Bullets' 14 hits. Pernice and Olson had two RBIs apiece.
Pat Flynn (New York, NY/Poly Prep Day School) and Greg Urich (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) combined to pitch the final two innings in relief of Whitman.
Flynn threw the eighth, record two strikeouts while Urich struck out the side in the ninth.
The win, which extends Gettysburg's current streak to four games, gave the Bullets a sweep of McDaniel, marking the first time since 2001 that has happened.
Gettysburg is scheduled to play a doubleheader at home against Haverford on Saturday. The first game begins at 11:30 a.m.
