College of New Jersey rallies for 7-6 win at Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Bridget Bigley, Lauren Dougher and Karen Doane scored two goals apiece as fifth-ranked College of New Jersey rallied for a 7-6 win over No. 7 Gettysburg in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Sunday.

Bigley’s second goal of the day put the Lions (5-2) ahead to stay with 19:21 remaining, part of a four-goal burst that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. Dougher, who took 10 of TCNJ’s 17 shots, knocked in the rebound of her own saved free-position shot for the eventual game-winner, helping the Lions improve to 6-0 all-time against the Bullets (9-3).

Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) scored twice for Gettysburg while Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) posted a team-high three points with a goal and two assists. Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) chipped in with a goal and an assist in the loss, the Bullets’ first at Clark Field.

Trailing 4-2 in a deliberately paced game, TCNJ used a 10-minute, 10-second offensive burst to turn the tables.

Fifty-five seconds after Lowe had given Gettysburg a two-goal lead, the Lions mounted their comeback.

Lauren Gossner forced a Bullet turnover and set up Dougher’s first goal of the day, pulling TCNJ within 4-3 with 26:23 left. Gettysburg goalie Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) stopped Dougher on a free-position attempt to temporarily preserve the hosts’ slim lead, but Gossner assisted on the game-tying goal by Toni-Anne Cavallo minutes later.

A solo run by Bigley put the Lions ahead to stay with 19:21 remaining. TCNJ goalie Megan Marquardt made two saves on Kelly before Doane capped the four-goal stretch with a free-position goal to make it 6-4 and force a Bullet timeout with 16:13 left.

Shihadeh sliced the deficit to 6-5 with a nifty free-position goal at the 9:53 mark, but Doane chased down the ensuing draw control and Dougher swept in her own free-position miss with 5:32 left for some crucial insurance.

Alexandra Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) scored off a scramble with 70 seconds left to pull Gettysburg within 7-6. The Bullets won possession on the draw control, but a caused turnover by Christine Cavallo and a ground ball by Toni-Anne derailed Gettysburg’s last chance to tie.

Seeking their first-ever win against the defending Division III runners-up, the Bullets led for most of the first half. Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) and Kelly gave Gettysburg a 2-0 lead midway through the half before Doane netted the Lions’ first goal with 13:00 left.

Lowe set up Shihadeh late in the first half and one-timed a goal from Kelly in the opening minutes of the second to stake the Bullets to a 4-2 lead.

Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded a team-high three draw controls, helping Gettysburg to an 8-7 advantage on the afternoon. Kelly took a team-high four shots.

Toni-Anne Cavallo led TCNJ with six ground balls.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at McDaniel. Game time is 4 p.m.
