Box Score
CARLISLE, Pa. – Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) hit his second triple of the game, plating two more Gettysburg runs to lead the Bullets to a 9-5 Centennial Conference (CC) baseball victory at Dickinson on Tuesday.
Dave Olson's (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard) double that followed to set the final margin made it nine extra-base hits on the day, including four three-baggers, for the Bullets (13-14, 6-3 CC), who came into the day with just five triples on the season.
Greg Urich (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), making his first start of the season, pitched the first 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic), despite giving up a two-out home run in the seventh, picked up his first win of the season, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Luke Volker went the first seven innings for the Red Devils (6-13-1, 2-7 CC) for a no-decision while Brian Kelley went the final two frames, allowing no earned runs for the loss.
Tied at 5-all entering the ninth, Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abbey School) drew a leadoff walk to start before giving way to pinch-runner Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa). A Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) sacrifice-bunt attempt was misplayed to put two on with no outs.
Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) got the sacrifice down to put runners at second and third with one away.
Dickinson handed out its second intentional walk of the day, putting Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) on to load the bases.
Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) grounded a ball to shortstop that could have ended the game but beat out the attempt at the double play, allowing Giordano's run to score and give Gettysburg a 6-5 lead.
Carey followed with his second triple in as many innings to clear the bases and Olson set the final margin with his double to the left-center gap.
Trailing 5-3 after six-and-a-half innings, Tre Dwinell sent a one-out single up the middle for the Red Devils to chase Urich.
Koch got Ryan Stearrett to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out, but Nick Perkins went up first-pitch swinging and rocketed a ball over the left-field scoreboard to knot the game at 5.
The Bullets jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring a single run in each of the first, second and third innings.
Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) led off the game with a triple to the gap in left-center. One batter later, Bonyai grounded out to the right-side of the infield to plate McGee.
After Ball and Carey each reached on singles to lead off the visitor second, the pair advanced a base on the first of three wild pitches.
Olson grounded to third base, but Ryan Anderson went home with the play. With two outs in the frame, McGee made it 2-for-2 in his first two at bats, singling to right-center to score Carey from second.
Bonyai led of the Bullet third with a single through the right side before stealing second. The second of Pernice's three doubles on the day – equaling his season total entering the game – allowed Bonyai to score for a 3-0 advantage.
A leadoff error and back-to-back in the bottom of the third allowed Dustin Cohen to score to close the gap to 3-1.
Volker drew a one-out walk in the home fourth. Anderson followed with a fielder's choice and a Cohen single to put runners at the corners with two away.
Chris McInerney grounded a ball that should have got Gettysburg out of the inning, but the second error of the game allowed Anderson's run to score.
A one-out single from Dwinell and two-out double by Perkins pulled Dickinson even in the fifth.
The Bullets immediately took the lead back, however. Ball reached on a leadoff triple before scoring on a wild pitch.
In the seventh it was doubles from Sweeney and Pernice that stretched it to a 5-3 advantage.
Pernice and Carey each recorded three hits on the afternoon. Pernice had three doubles with two RBIs while Carey was 3-for-5 with two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Bullets complete the home-and-home series against Dickinson at home on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
