Gettysburg rallies for 10-8 win at McDaniel; Shihadeh posts career-high five points

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) recorded a career-high five points, helping sixth-ranked Gettysburg rally from its largest halftime deficit of the season and defeat McDaniel 10-8 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.

With the Bullets trailing 7-5 midway through the second half, Shihadeh had a hand in three straight goals to key the Gettysburg comeback. She scored two goals and dished out three assists on the afternoon, lifting the Bullets (10-3, 6-1 CC) to their seventh consecutive win over the Green Terror (6-4, 2-4 CC).

Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) scored twice and added one assist in the win while Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) also compiled three points on a goal and two helpers.

Tara Smith scored twice and added two assists for McDaniel while goalie Lindsay O’Steen made 17 saves, helping the Green Terror survive a 37-17 shot deficit. Lindsay Ricks and Michelle Mullen also connected for two goals apiece in the loss.

Down by a season-high three goals at halftime (6-3) and by a 7-5 count with 16 minutes left, Gettysburg rallied to move one step closer to a CC playoff spot.

A caused turnover by Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) set up the Bullets’ first goal of the decisive run. After a successful clearing attempt, Shihadeh set up Kelly to pull Gettysburg within 7-6.

An O’Steen free-position save on Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) temporarily preserved the lead, but Ceglarski kept the play alive with a ground ball pickup and Shihadeh converted the tying goal seconds later.

Moore won the ensuing draw control and Shihadeh set up a transition goal from Delauney, putting the Bullets ahead to stay at 8-7. Ceglarski converted a free-position goal to cap the burst with 7:29 remaining.

Ricks cut the Green Terror deficit to 9-8 with an unassisted marker at 55:19, but McDaniel was held without a shot the rest of the way. Moore sealed the win with a goal in the final seconds.

The two teams traded goals in the opening 13 minutes, with Gettysburg taking a 3-2 lead on Ceglarski’s first goal of the day at 12:44. The Green Terror answered with four straight goals in the final 15:03 of the half to take a 6-3 lead into the break.

Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) and Shihadeh drew the Bullets within 6-5, but Smith scored with 21:06 left and McDaniel maintained its two-goal lead until Kelly started the Gettysburg comeback with 15:51 remaining.

Hagan finished with two goals while Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) also found the net. Laurie Goon (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) led the Bullets with three draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Haverford. Game time is 1 p.m.
