GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) went the distance for the fifth time this season, allowing just one earned run in Gettysburg's 7-2 victory over visiting Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Friday.
Whitman, who made it 16 complete games in 28 games for the Bullet pitching staff, recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts and was tossing a three-hit shutout through the first six innings.
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) led an 11-hit barrage with a 3-for-5 day for Gettysburg (14-14, 7-3 CC), adding a double, RBI and two runs scored. Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) and Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) added two-hit outings for the Bullets, who recorded their ninth 10-hit game and third in a row.
Ryan Miklusak notched two of the seven hits for the Red Devils (7-14-1, 2-8 CC), who were swept by Gettysburg for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) drew a one-out walk in the home half of the first inning.
Bonyai followed with a single through the left side, and both moved up on a wild pitch.
With runners at second and third, Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) drilled a fly ball to deep center to score Carey on the sacrifice and stake Gettysburg to a 1-0 lead.
In the Bullet third, McGee led off with a single near the line in right field. McGee got second on the first of two failed pickoff attempts before scoring on a Bonyai double to the left-field fence.
After Pernice reached on a strikeout-wild pitch that also allowed Bonyai to move to third, Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abby School) singled home Bonyai to put Gettysburg up 3-0.
With runners at first and second, Dickinson starter Matt Eonta got a ground ball to second for the inning-ending double play.
Carey led off the fifth with a single to left and swiped second on a misplayed ball by the Red Devil left fielder.
A Bonyai hard-hit comebacker made it first and third before Sweeney drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
A Ball single to center scored Carey and Bonyai and extend the lead to 5-0.
Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) drew his second walk of the game to once again load the bases, but a fly out and 12-pitch strikeout got Eonta out of further damage.
After Whitman had struck out four straight, Miklusak led off the visitor sixth with just the third Dickinson hit of the game. However, Whitman needed just four more pitches to lead him standing on the second.
Nick Perkins, who had a double and home run in Tuesday's meeting, singled to left to lead off the seventh.
A one-out single up the middle by Ryan Anderson put runners at first and second, marking the first time in the contest that Whitman had to pitch with two men on.
A Dustin Cohen single to right would have set up bases loaded, but the throw home sailed high and allowed Perkins to trot home and break up the shutout.
A Chris McInerney RBI groundout to first allowed Anderson to score from third to cut the advantage to 5-2.
Back-to-back two-base errors to start to home eighth gave the Bullets another run on the board.
A Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) pinch-hit single to left put runners at the corners with no outs.
With Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) standing on third and pinch-runner Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) at first, McGee found a gap down the line in right field to plate Freeburger, but Campo was gunned out at third looking for the extra base.
Up 7-2, McGee got second on the second failed pickoff of the game before Bonyai reached on the fourth Red Devil error of the inning.
With runners at the corner and two away, Mike Lapicki, pitching the eighth inning in relief of Eonta, got a fly ball to left to finally end the frame.
After Dickinson had its first two batters of the ninth inning reach, Whitman got a fly out, strikeout and ground out to finish the game.
Whitman improved to 4-2 with the win, allowing seven hits. Eonta gave up five earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts to pick up the loss for the Red Devils.
Gettysburg returns to action in a doubleheader at Muhlenberg on Saturday. The first pitch of game one is 12:30 p.m.
