Box Scores – Game One | Game Two

ALLENTOWN, Pa.Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) went 3-for-4 in the opener of a doubleheader at Muhlenberg, leading Gettysburg to a game-one victory in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.

The Bullets (15-15, 8-4 CC) plated five first-inning runs en route to an 8-5 victory before the Mules (13-8, 5-5 CC) torched the Gettysburg pitching staff for the most runs and hits allowed in 16 games, taking the nightcap by a 13-2 margin.

Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) lasted 3 2/3 innings in game one before giving way to Cody Mang (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional), who held Muhlenberg without a hit in the last 3 1/3 innings for his third win of the season.

In the second game, starter Ross Hempel (Marriotsville, MD/Glenelg) got touched up for five runs in two-plus innings to fall to 4-4 on the season and get an early exit for the first time this season.

Jason Bonder went 5 2/3 innings for the Mules in the opener for the loss while Matthew Cooper lasted the full nine in the nightcap, striking out eight to improve to 2-0.

Tied at 5 in the opener with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fifth, Ball singled to score Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) to put Gettysburg ahead to stay.

A two-out error in the sixth allowed McGee to score from second and make it 7-5 and a Ball RBI groundout in the seventh scored pinch-hitter Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster), who tripled one batter earlier, to set the final margin.

Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) led off the doubleheader, reaching on an error.

Carey followed with a single to right but made it to third on the second of six Muhlenberg errors in game one, allowing McGee to score.

With one out, Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) singled to center, scoring Carey for a 2-0 Bullet advantage.

An infield single from Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) put runners at first and second before Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) and Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) drew back-to-back walks to make it 3-0.

Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) reached on a fielder's choice but the third Mule error of the inning allowed both Ball and McDonald to score for a 5-0 lead.

After two walks and two singles in the bottom of the third cut the advantage to 5-1, Ryan Sassaman hit into a fielder's choice, scoring A.J. Bettini, who reached on one of the two singles.

With two outs, Sassaman got caught in a rundown, but it allowed Matthew Block to score from third to cut the deficit to 5-3.

With one out in the Mule fourth, Mike Hart doubled before Chad Hegstrom tripled with two outs make it a one-run game.

A Bettini single knotted the contest at 5, chasing Borman for Mang, who allowed just two Muhlenberg runners to reach the rest of the game.

Pernice notched his team-leading 10th multiple-hit game in the opener, while Ball had two RBIs.

In the nightcap, triples from C.J. Kessler and Matt Tobia each tripled to give the Mules an early 2-0 advantage.

Kessler's second triple of the game scored Joe Carlo, who led off the bottom of the second with a single, for a 3-0 lead.

A leadoff walk and Tobia home run in the third chased Hempel in favor of Pat Flynn (New York, NY/Poly Prep Country Day) who retired the next four batters he faced before surrendering back-to-back walks in the fourth.

Sassaman tallied the fourth of five Muhlenberg triples to score Kessler and make it 5-0.

Gettysburg finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when Pernice reached on an error, allowing Bonyai, who tripled one batter earlier, to score.

A hit batsman, single, error and double in the seventh stretched the Mule advantage to 9-1 and chased Flynn in favor of Kenny Stone (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic), who walked the first batter he faced and gave up a triple to Hegstrom to clear the bases and make it an 11-1 game.

Bonyai immediately got one of those runs back with his first home run of the season to lead off the visitor eighth, but that would be as close as the Bullets could get.

Two singles, two walks and an error in the bottom half of the frame accounted for Muhlenberg's final two tallies.

Bonyai and Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abby School) each tallied two hits in the nightcap.

Gettysburg returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
