Sixth-ranked Gettysburg uses late burst to subdue McDaniel, 11-9; Renzi collects career-high five points

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) collected a career-high five points as sixth-ranked Gettysburg used a late run to break open a tie game and defeat McDaniel 11-9 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Renzi scored three goals for his third collegiate hat trick and added two assists, helping the Bullets (9-3, 5-0 CC) remain on top of the conference standings with three games remaining. Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) added three assists on the day, setting up two goals during a 3-0 burst in a span of two minutes that snapped an 8-all tie midway through the fourth quarter.

Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis), Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) netted two goals apiece for Gettysburg.

Green Terror sophomore Steve Hoffman matched Renzi’s output in the losing cause, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists. Kolyn Kirby also found the net thrice for McDaniel (4-7, 1-4 CC).

After falling behind 4-1, the Green Terror battled to tie the game on four occasions before the Bullets scored three quick goals to open up some breathing room.

With the score tied at 8, Gettysburg killed off a one-minute, man-down situation before Freehill scored off a Stewart set-up to make it 9-8 with 7:57 remaining.

A McDaniel slashing penalty gave the Bullets an extra-man opportunity moments later, and scoring leader Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) wasted little time collecting his 24th goal of the year – with Stewart adding his team-high 17th assist – for a 10-8 advantage.

Renzi’s unassisted goal on Gettysburg’s next possession pushed the lead to 11-8 with 5:57 remaining. Matthew Buschman answered for the Green Terror with 2:39 to play, but the hosts could get no closer down the stretch.

What started as a Bullet runaway quickly became a back-and-forth nail-biter. Four goals in the opening 5 minutes, 54 seconds gave Gettysburg a 4-1 lead, but McDaniel turned the tables with a 4-1 second quarter to make it 5-5 at halftime.

Renzi scored just 22 seconds into the second half to put the Bullets back on top before Kirby cashed in a man-up chance to pull the Green Terror even at 6.

Gallant and Hoffman traded goals to make it 7-7 after three quarters. Stewart set up Sowanick with 12:04 remaining, but Rob Weaver answered off a Hoffman feed fewer than two minutes later to tie the game at 8, setting the stage for Gettysburg’s winning burst.

Renzi fired a team-high seven of the Bullets’ 25 shots and also led the way with six ground balls, giving him 26 pick-ups in his last three games. Pryor added an assist to wrap up the day with a team-leading 40 points on the year.

Weaver finished with two goals and one assist for McDaniel.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Haverford. Game time is 1 p.m.
