Gettysburg, Susquehanna split non-conference doubleheader

GETTYSBURG
, Pa.Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) went a combined 5-for-8 at the plate to help Gettysburg split with Susquehanna in non-conference softball action on Thursday.

Pareso went 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored, helping the Bullets (24-5-1) to a 7-3 opener win and 2-for-4 with a triple in the 5-4 nightcap loss.

Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) pitched her 10th complete game in game one, allowing three earned runs and striking out four while Pareso saw her winning streak snapped after going the distance in game two.

Gettysburg brought its heavy bats alive, tallying a total of 25 hits on the day.

Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) was 6-for-8 on the day with 2 RBIs and one run score while Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) went 4-for-6 for the Bullets.

Gettysburg jumped off to a quick start in the opener.

Pareso hit a base hit and advanced to second on a Crusader error before advancing on a Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) sacrifice bunt.

Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) hit an RBI-single, plating Pareso, before singles from Gutermuth and Sagaities loaded the bases.

Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) hit an RBI-ground out to second base that scored Gale.

The Bullets temporarily lost the lead in the bottom of the first. Susquehanna scored three runs off singles from Kelsey Conway, Megan McCurley, and Heather Litzebauer and a double from Kerri Brugger.

Gettysburg held the Crusaders after they took the lead with three more runs in the second inning.

Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) led the inning off with a single then Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Pareso singled before Pilarcik nailed a two-RBI double to score Dean and Pareso.

Gutermuth brought in the final run of the inning with a single that plated Pilarcik, giving the Bullets a 5-3 advantage.

Eiden led off the visitor's third with a single, then scored on an error that put Dean at first. Pareso then nailed an RBI-triple to score Dean and secure the Bullets the win 7-3.

Gettysburg fell in the nightcap despite out hitting Susquehanna 12-9.

The Crusaders took the lead they would not relinquish in the first inning.

Sarah Shaffer led off with a single then advanced to second on a McCurley single. Then a couple Bullet miscues led to a 2-0 Susquehanna lead.

The Bullets chipped away at the margin, scoring in three consecutive innings, but the Crusaders continued to put runs on the board to bring in the seventh with a  5-3 advantage.

Gettysburg had the bases loaded after Gale and Gutermuth each singled to put runners at first and second. Sagaities walked to load the bases before Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) also walked to score Gale with two outs.

The Bullets could do no more after a ground out on the next play.

Pilarcik went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while as did Gale who scored a run.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action with a doubleheader Saturday at Ursinus. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
