Gettysburg clinches CC playoff spot with 9-2 win at Haverford

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored a game-high three goals and sixth-ranked Gettysburg allowed a single goal in each half of a 9-2 win over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Gallant, who has eight goals in his last three games, added one assist for a season-high four points, helping the Bullets (10-3, 6-0 CC) clinch a spot in the CC playoffs. Gettysburg can wrap up hosting rights with a win over Dickinson on Wednesday.

Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) also keyed the offense with two goals and two assists, his second-highest, single-game point total of the season. Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) backstopped the defense with 10 saves, helping the Bullets keep the Fords (8-6, 3-4 CC) scoreless for the first 29 minutes, 6 seconds of the first half and the initial 26:14 of the second half.

Gettysburg leading scorer Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) chipped in with two goals and one assist.

Neil Gordon and Joe Mauri scored for Haverford while K.C. Peterson made 15 saves against 40 Bullet shots.

Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis) opened the scoring with an extra-man goal at the 9:36 mark of the first quarter and Harriman made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal 49 seconds later.

Vaughan made six of his eight first-half saves to maintain Gettysburg’s two-goal lead before Gallant started his hat trick off a feed from Harriman with 10:20 left in the half. Pryor pushed the lead to 4-0 with three minutes remaining off a feed from Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown).

Gordon put the Fords on the board with 54 seconds left in the half, moments after Vaughan had stopped Shane Hafer for his eight save of the half.

Following a lightning delay that prolonged halftime, the Bullets went back to work with the same formula.

Peterson made saves on five of Gettysburg’s 10 third-quarter shots, but the Bullets managed to extend the lead to 5-1 on a goal by Pryor at the 9:41 mark, touching off a 4-0 Gettysburg run that sealed the win.

Gallant made it 6-1 minutes into the final quarter, Harriman converted a man-up opportunity and Gallant struck again with 5:18 left for an 8-1 lead. Mauri netted Haverford’s only goal of the second half with 3:46 remaining before Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) closed the scoring with his 12th goal of the season.

Gettysburg close defensemen Matt Smith (Quakertown, PA/Germantown Acad.), Matt Stanley (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall College) and Andrew McGann (Laguna, CA/Holderness [NH]) each picked up four ground balls on the day.

In winning their first six conference games, the Bullets have allowed only 5.17 goals per game against CC opponents. Saturday’s performance lowered the team’s overall goals-against average to 6.38.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Dickinson. Game time is 4 p.m.
