Gettysburg wraps up CC slate with 16-5 win over Muhlenberg; Bullets to face Ursinus in semifinals

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) scored a team-high three goals to become one of Gettysburg’s all-time top-10 goal scorers and help the fifth-ranked Bullets defeat Muhlenberg 16-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Delauney finished the day with 111 career goals, edging ahead of Kris Nagy (110 from 1990-93) for 10th place on the all-time list. The senior also snapped a tie with Nagy for 10th place on the program’s all-time career points list (134).

Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) and Jamie Giffuni (St. James, NY/Smithtown) added two goals and one assist apiece for Gettysburg (12-3, 8-1 CC), which got goals from 12 different players to improve to 18-0 all-time against the Mules (7-7, 3-6 CC).

Courtney Tapkas scored three times for Muhlenberg, increasing her team-leading goal total to 46. Diana Bleakley made 15 saves on the day while facing 35 shots.

On an overcast Senior Day, Gettysburg scored six goals in the game’s first eight minutes and was never threatened.

The senior tandem of Zappacosta and Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) combined on the game’s first goal with Zappacosta finishing 65 seconds into the contest. Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) made it 2-0 just 41 seconds later, picking up a rebound and firing home her 11th goal of the year.

Zappacosta corralled the ensuing draw control and Delauney scored in transition to make it 3-0. Bleakley stopped Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) on a free-position attempt moments later, but Dougherty scooped up the loose ball and Kelly converted a second-chance opportunity for a four-goal lead.

Delauney scored her second goal of the game at 7:20, then set up Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) 26 seconds later to make it 6-0.

Tapkas stopped the Bullet run and put the Mules on the board at 9:13 off a feed from Jessica Geiger, but Gettysburg rattled off the next three goals and took a 10-3 lead into halftime. Delauney’s goal with 9:07 left in the first half broke the program’s 10th-place tie and rounded out her four-point day.

Giffuni picked up all three of her points after halftime to key the Bullets’ six-goal second half.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) finished with two points apiece for Gettysburg.
Shannon Donohue added one goal and one assist while Katie Reimann handed out two assists for Muhlenberg.

After wrapping up the regular season with non-conference Cabrini on Tuesday, the Bullets face Ursinus in the CC semifinals on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall. Game time is to be determined.
