Gettysburg takes two from Swarthmore

Box Scores – Game One | Game Two

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) recorded five hits, four RBIs, four runs scored on the day to lead Gettysburg to a doubleheader sweep of Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Sunday.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) – one of his two hits on the day – looped a ball into left field to break a 4-all tie and give the Bullets (17-16, 10-5 CC) a 5-4 victory.

In the nightcap, Bonyai was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double to complete the sweep of the Garnet (5-21, 3-13 CC) with an 11-1 win.

Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic), pitching the final inning of the opener in relief of starter Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover), picked up his second win of the season. In game two, Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) went 7 1/3 innings with four strikeouts for his second win.

With game one knotted at 4, Bonyai drew a four-pitch walk to open the home seventh.

After Bonyai stole second and with one away, Swarthmore elected to set up the double play and intentionally walk Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abby School), but the second pitch got too close to the plate and Sweeney took a crack at it, drawing a catcher's interference.

Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) made it a two-hit game one with a single to load the bases before Freeburger roped the full-count pitch to shallow left, plating Bonyai with the game-winning run.

Trailing 4-0, Scott Young led off the Garnet fifth with a single. After reaching second on a passed ball, Young stole third with two outs and scored on an errant throw to pull Swarthmore within 4-1.

Two singles and a hit batsman in the top of the sixth loaded the bases with one out.

After Whitman induced a foul-fly out, Ben Mendelson doubled down the left-field line to clear the bases and tie the game at 4.

Koch retired the side in order, including a pair of strikeouts, in the top of the seventh to set up the final-inning drama.

The Bullets opened scoring with three first-inning runs.

Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) led off the bottom half of the frame with a double to left. After an Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) groundout advanced Carey to third, Bonyai singled to left to make it 1-0.

Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) made it back-to-back, to set up first and second for Sweeney, who doubled to the gap in left-center for a 3-0 Gettysburg advantage.

The Bullets tacked on an unearned run in the fourth inning. Freeburger reached on a fielder's choice and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) reached on a two-out fielding error before Carey notched his fourth two-hit game with an infield RBI single.

Carey, Sweeney and Donohue all recorded multiple hits in the opener.

Whitman tallied seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Alex Ryan-Bond went the distance for Swarthmore, fanning three to pick up the loss.

In the nightcap, Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) led off the bottom of the first with a triple to the wall in right-center.

Carey followed with a deep fly ball to center, setting up a sacrifice fly situation for Giordano at third, but a dropped ball allowed Giordano to score and Carey to end up at second.

Bonyai singled up the middle one batter later to score Carey.

After a fly out, Sweeney and Donohue drew back-to-back walks to load the bases before Ball flied out to center, scoring Bonyai from third and staking the Bullets to a 3-0 lead.

A walk, hit batter, three singles, three of the squad's five stolen bases and a throwing error accounted for four more Gettysburg runs in the fourth, stretching the lead to 7-0.

Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) led off the fifth a single before back-to-back one-out RBI singles from Carey and Bonyai made it a 9-0 game after five complete innings.

Scattering nine hits through the first six innings, Borman hit Matt Fisher with a 2-2 pitch.

Young drew a one-out walk before Patrick Christmas leaded the bases with an infield single.

Sam Faeder grounded to third, where Pernice stepped on the bag, but the throw got away on the attempt for a double play at first, allowing Fisher to score and break up the shutout.

Matt Stillitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) and Freeburger put together back-to-back singles with two outs in the home eighth before Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) cleared the bags with a double to the wall in center to set the final margin.

In addition to Bonyai's second four-hit game of the season, Donohue added his second three-hit contest.

Justin Chen pitched the first inning for the Garnet before leaving with an injury to pick up the loss. Cody Mang (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the Bullets, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Gettysburg travels to Baltimore, Md., for its makeup game at Johns Hopkins on Monday. Game time is 3:0 p.m.
