GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) went 4-for-7 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs to help Gettysburg sweep McDaniel and claim sole possession of first place in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.
The Bullets (26-5-1, 11-1 CC) completed their first sweep of the Green Terror (16-15, 9-3 CC) since the 1999 season with the 8-1 first-game win and 9-4 nightcap victory.
Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) went 3-for-6 with four runs scored and two RBIs on the day while Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) (14-1) pitched her 11th complete game of the season, allowing one run and striking out five in the opener while Pareso (10-3) nabbed the game two win with her ninth complete game.
Gettysburg took full advantage of McDaniel's 14 errors on the day, scoring 14 unearned runs across the two games.
After two scoreless innings in the opener, Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) led off with a single through the left side before Pareso advanced her with a sacrifice bunt.
Pilarcik singled to centerfield, then advanced to second on a Terror error that scored Dean. Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) blooped to right field, moving Pilarcik to third. Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) reached on an error that scored Pilarcik, giving the Bullets a 2-0 advantage after three innings.
McDaniel scored its lone run in the visitor's fifth after Karyn Curley nailed a triple to left field and Tina Danner drove her home with an RBI-single to right-center.
The Bullets insured the win with four more runs in the bottom of frame on four hits and four miscues by the Green Terror.
Pareso hit an infield single and advanced when Pilarcik and Gale each reached on an error, loading the bases. Gutermuth singled to left field, plating Pareso and leaving a runner at every base.
Pilarcik scored after Sagaities reached on an error. Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) then singled to center field to score Gale and an Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) RBI ground-out scored Sagaities, closing the inning with a 6-1 advantage.
Pilarcik ripped her third homer of the season over the center-field fence to score Gettysburg's final two runs of the game.
Despite out hitting Gettysburg 8-6 in game two, seven McDaniel errors lead to nine unearned runs for the Bullets.
McDaniel jumped off to a quick start in the nightcap, scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning, but the Bullets answered with five runs in the second inning.
Gutermuth reached on an error to lead off the inning before Sagaities singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. Eiden and Miller each reached on Terror errors which scored Gutermuth and Sagaities.
Gorsuch advanced Eiden and Miller with a sacrifice bunt before Pareso helped out her own cause with a double to left field that brought in two runs and gave the Bullets a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Gettysburg brought in four more runs in the sixth inning on two hits and two errors to secure the 9-4 win.
Curley went 4-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI for McDaniel while Caitlin Burns and Abby Cannistraci each went 2-for-3 in the opener.
