GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples to lead Gettysburg to a 9-4 win over visiting Susquehanna in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.
Bonyai was also hit by a pitch and walked to reach base in all five of his plate appearances, adding three runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base for the Bullets (18-17), who had five of their 13 hits go for extra bases.
Matt Hess went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Crusaders (6-23-1), who used four pitchers in the contest.
After a two-out walk in the top of the first, Jason Gaccione roped a ball into right field for Susquehanna's first hit of the game, but Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) gunned Matt Reichard at the plate to get out of the inning.
With one out in the bottom half of the inning, Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) started the barrage with a single up the middle.
Bonyai ripped a 1-0 pitch to wall in right-center for his first triple of the day, plating Ball for the 1-0 advantage.
With two outs, Matt Sweeney (Bethesda, MD/St. Anselms Abby School) was hit by the first pitch he saw – the first of three times he reached that way.
An Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) RBI single and Straub walk loaded the bases, but Crusader starter Greg Dobson got a ground ball to leave the bases loaded.
Reliever Craig Cote gave up a leadoff single to Dylan Reilly (Athens, PA/Athens) but got two ground balls, including an inning-ending, around-the-horn double play.
Andrew Salemme drew a one-out walk and stole second before scoring on a two-out single to left off the bat of Reichard to cut the deficit in half.
After Bonyai was hit by the first pitch of the third inning and stole his 11th base of the season, Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) laced a double in the gap to plate Bonyai.
Sweeney's reached on the second hit batsman of the inning before Freeburger doubled home Pernice to give Gettysburg a 4-1 lead.
The bottom of the fourth started off like a carbon-copy of the first.
With one away, Ball singled and Bonyai ripped his sixth triple of the season to the wall.
Pernice ripped a 2-0 count to the warning track. Bonyai was tagging for the sacrifice, but a dropped fly ball allowed Pernice to trade places with Bonyai.
With that, Cote gave way to Brian Pyrz. A passed ball on the third pitch from Pyrz allowed Pernice to score for a 7-1 lead. On next pitch with a 3-0 count, Sweeney drew his third hit batsman from a third different pitcher.
Pryz settled in and got a fielder's choice and fly out to get out the frame.
Susquehanna benefited from a two-out error in the top of the fifth to plate three unearned runs to cut the deficit to 7-4.
With runners at the corners and two out, a fielding error gave the Crusaders new life and led directly to Chris Mothershed scoring from third.
Adam Donlevie drew a four-pitch walk before Hess laced a ball to the gap to score Reichard and Jason Gaccione.
Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) reached on a strikeout-throwing error with two outs in the fifth.
A Ball single to right put runners on the corners for Bonyai, who notched an infield single to plate Carey for the 8-4 lead.
Freeburger reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the sixth and stole second before pinch-hitter Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) doubled to left to make it 9-4.
After Gaccione drew a leadoff walk, Donlevie singled to right. However, Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) came up firing to nail Gaccione at third.
A Hess single chased Bullet starter Cody Mang (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) in favor of Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Rosselle Catholic), who got a strikeout and groundout to leave two of Susquehanna's 14 stranded baserunners.
The Crusaders once again threatened in the top of the ninth with two walks and a single, but Koch got a pair of strikeouts and a game-ending ground ball to leave the bags full.
Ball added second three-hit outing of the season and scored twice. Freeburger recorded a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Mang went 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out three to improve to 4-0.
Gettysburg returns to action at home against Villa Julie on Wednesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
