Pryor’s four goals help Gettysburg defeat Dickinson, clinch top seed in CC playoffs

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) matched a career high with four goals and added two assists as fifth-ranked Gettysburg used a five-goal third quarter to defeat Dickinson 12-9 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Pryor had a hand in three goals during a 4-0 run that turned a 7-6 deficit into a three-goal lead after three quarters. With the win, the Bullets (11-3, 7-0 CC) clinched the top seed in next weekend’s conference playoffs and will host the CC tournament for the first time since 2002.

Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) also fueled Gettysburg’s 50-shot attack with his second collegiate hat trick, giving him seven points in his last two games. Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) also finished with three points, scoring twice to go with one assist.

The loss overshadowed a superlative performance by Red Devil junior and current CC Co-Player of the Week Brian Read, who scored seven goals on the afternoon, the second highest total by a Centennial player this season.

Flynn Burch dished out three assists for Dickinson (8-4, 5-2 CC), which would lock up the CC’s No. 3 seed with a win over Ursinus on Saturday. Kevin Riley made 14 saves in the loss.

Trailing at halftime for only the third time this season, the Bullets turned to their leading scorer to overcome the Red Devils and bring the playoffs back to Musselman Stadium.

Less than a minute after Read’s fifth goal gave Dickinson its final lead of the day at 7-6, Pryor scored off a feed from Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) to tie the game with 10:24 left in the third quarter, a play that started with T.J. Liberto (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s) forcing a Red Devil turnover in the Gettysburg defensive zone.

Pat Vaughan’s (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) lone save of the third quarter stopped Read from putting Dickinson back on top. After the ensuing clear, Pryor netted an unassisted goal to put the Bullets ahead to stay at 8-7.

Gettysburg again turned defense into offense to make it 9-7. Matt Stanley (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall College) forced another Red Devil miscue, Pryor scooped the ground ball and fed Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield), who finished for a two-goal lead.

Harriman followed with a key momentum goal, scoring with two seconds left in the third quarter for a 10-7 lead.

Read’s extra-man goal midway through the fourth quarter pulled Dickinson within two, but Harriman and Stewart struck in a span of 1 minute, 59 seconds to seal the win.

Despite being outshot 27-11, the Red Devils built a 6-5 halftime lead by picking their spots and winning 11 of 13 first-half face-offs.

Read needed fewer than 11 minutes to post his first hat trick of the day and give Dickinson a 3-1 lead.

The Bullets trailed until Pryor and Harriman scored back-to-back goals to knot the game at 5. Ed Lawless gave the Red Devils a 6-5 halftime lead, netting his ninth goal of the season with 2:14 left in the second quarter.

In addition to his six-point day, Pryor led Gettysburg with 14 shots and eight ground balls. Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis) also scored for the Bullets while Vaughan recorded nine saves, including six in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.

Drew Peace added one goal for Dickinson while Ed Boyd recorded one assist.

The win was Gettysburg’s 31st consecutive victory against the Red Devils, a streak that began in 1976.

The Bullets wrap up their regular-season schedule on Saturday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 1 p.m.
