GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Gettysburg to a 1-0 victory in game one as the Bullets split a doubleheader with Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Thursday.
Gettysburg (27-6-1, 12-2 CC), who clinched a playoff spot with the sweep of McDaniel on Tuesday, dropped a 7-0 decision in the nightcap to the Bears (30-8, 11-3 CC).
Kiry went the distance for the 12th time and picked up her seventh shutout this season, allowing three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) went a perfect 4-for-4 on the day, while Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) was 3-for-5 with the game-winning run in the opener.
It was a dual of the pitchers in game one, with no one able to put a run on the board until the seventh inning.
Eiden singled past the shortstop to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) sacrifice bunt.
Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) hit a ground out to the shortstop that put Eiden in scoring position before Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) drove in the game-winning run with an RBI base hit to left field, plating Eiden.
Ursinus loaded the bases at the bottom of the inning off a walk, a single from Eileen Caldwell and a hit batter, but could not convert, giving the Bullets the 1-0 victory.
Errors plagued Gettysburg in the nightcap, committing seven miscues that lead to three unearned runs.
The Bears took advantage and jumped ahead quick, scoring a run in the first, two in the third and four in the fourth to take the game two victory, 7-0.
Sarah Hennessey drove in the two runs in the third inning with a two-out double to left-center field, plating Marcy Logan and Mary Reid who both reached off fielder's choices.
Ellie Knise went nailed a double to drive in two runs in the fourth inning and then hit another double in the sixth to go 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.
Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) took the loss in the circle for the Bullets after giving up four earned runs in four innings of work.
Gettysburg continues its string of road games with a non-conference doubleheader on Friday at No. 4-ranked Salisbury. The first game starts at 3:30 p.m.
