Salisbury uses third-quarter burst to seal 13-7 win over Gettysburg

SALISBURY, Md. – Dan Boyer and Mac Chase each scored a team-high three goals to lead top-ranked Salisbury over No. 9 Gettysburg 13-7 in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Sunday.

 Casey Olejniczak added two goals while Chris Phillips collected one goal and two assists for the two-time defending Division III champions, who posted their 39th consecutive victory. The Sea Gulls (10-0) got 10 saves from Dan Korpon and a 14-for-21 face-off performance from Bryan Bradford in their third straight win over the Bullets (5-3).

 Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led Gettysburg with a career-high four goals while Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) scored twice, improving his team-leading goal total to 17. Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) matched a season high with 14 saves while facing 40 shots.

 Salisbury never trailed after an extra-man goal by Chase late in the first quarter, but needed a 7-2 run over the game’s final 21 minutes to pull away.

 Pryor made it 1-0 just 45 seconds into the contest and Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) knotted the game at 2 off a feed from Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with 5:50 left in the first quarter.

 The Bullets nearly killed off a one-minute slashing penalty in the final minutes of the period, but Phillips set up Chase with 52 seconds left in the quarter for a 3-2 lead, touching off a 4-1 Sea Gull run.

 Down 6-3 at halftime, Gettysburg rallied with a pair of unassisted goals from Renzi to pull within 6-5 with 6:24 left in the third quarter.

 Salisbury answered with a four-goal eruption in a span of 1 minute, 58 seconds to take a commanding 10-5 lead. Boyer scored twice during the run.

 Renzi completed his second collegiate hat trick with 58 seconds left in the third, but Olejniczak, Matt Dasinger and Chase scored in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter to make it a 13-6 game. Renzi closed out the scoring with 44 ticks remaining.

 The Sea Gulls outshot the Bullets 40-30 on the afternoon and held a 49-30 advantage in ground balls.

 In addition to his four goals, Renzi led Gettysburg with 11 shots and four ground balls.

 The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Washington College. Game time is 1 p.m.
