LANCASTER,
Pa. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) scored four goals
and added one assist to lead seventh-ranked Gettysburg over Ursinus 11-6 in the
Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse semifinals on Saturday.
Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep)
and Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) added two goals apiece
for the three-time defending champion Bullets (14-3), who will face top-seeded
Franklin & Marshall in the conference championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Diplomats reached their third straight final with a 17-6 win over McDaniel
on Saturday.
With her four-goal
outing, Delauney reached the 40-goal mark for the second consecutive year and
continued to vex the Bears (9-6) in the postseason. The senior, who scored three
times to stake Gettysburg to a 5-1 halftime lead, scored a career-high eight goals
in last year’s semifinal victory against Ursinus.
Aubrey Andre led the Bears with two goals and
one assist while Allyson Shicora made 13 saves.
Meeting Ursinus for the fifth time in as many CC postseasons,
the Bullets built a 7-2 lead and eased into their fifth straight championship
game.
Ashley Ettinger
put the Bears ahead 1-0 at 7:16, but Gettysburg rattled off seven of the next
eight goals.
Jenn Kelly
(Westbury, NY/Carle Place) started the burst with an unassisted tally
at 10:24 and Delauney opened her four-goal day with an unassisted marker at 12:44,
putting the Bullets ahead to stay. Delauney struck again at 16:34, before setting
up Shihadeh for a three-goal advantage.
Delauney netted her third goal of the day on another solo move, giving Gettysburg
a 5-1 lead at halftime.
Andre
found the net three minutes into the second half to snap Ursinus’ 25-minute, 44-second
scoring drought, but goals from Zappacosta and Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward
Melville) pushed the Bullet lead to 7-2 with 22:53 remaining.
Kaitlin Glenn touched off a 4-2 Bear run
that cut the deficit to 9-6 with 8:34 left, but Gettysburg controlled the ball
for a majority of the next five minutes before Shihadeh and Zappacosta sealed
the win with goals in the final 3:44.
Alexandra
Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) also scored in the win while Kate
Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) led the Bullets with four caused turnovers.
Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) paced Gettysburg with seven
shots and four draw controls.
