Sixth-inning home run leads Franklin & Marshall to win, snaps Gettysburg’s win streak

LANCASTER, Pa. – Jon Compitello made his lone hit of the day count – a three-run home run in the sixth inning that propelled Franklin & Marshall to a 3-1 win over visiting Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday.

Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) led the offense for the Bullets (9-12, 2-1 CC), recording three of his squad's six hits.

Ted Serro pitched the first six innings for the Diplomats (8-10, 2-1 CC), tallying four strikeouts to even his record at 2-2. EJ Leary came on in relief to pick up his second save of the season.

Trailing 1-0 entering the home sixth, Rob Stern reached on Gettysburg's third error of the game.

Gary Kruger followed with a single and Corey Caruthers reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out.

Compitello took Ross Hempel (Marriotsville, MD/Glenelg) yard to put Franklin & Marshall on top, and the Diplomats twice got out of trouble in the final three innings to preserve the win.

Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) led of the Bullet fifth with a double and moved to third on a Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) sacrifice before scoring on a Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Hempel went the distance for the sixth time this year to fall to 4-2. He struck out three along the way and gave up six hits, including his second homer of the season.

In the loss, which snaps a four-game win streak, Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) went 0-for-4, his first hitless game since Mar. 19, snapping an 10-game stretch with at least one base hit.

Gettysburg completes the home-and-home series at home against Franklin & Marshall on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
