GRANTHAM, Pa. – Both Gettysburg pitchers took no-hitters deep into their respective games, and the offense did the work, leading the Bullets to a sweep at Messiah in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.
Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), who took her no-hitter two outs into the sixth inning, finished her outing allowing just three singles in the 6-0 opening-game win.
Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) faced one batter over the minimum through the first four frames before giving up her lone hit of the nightcap – a two-out single – in the bottom of the fifth, and Gettysburg (12-3-1) plated three runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 7-0 victory.
Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) led the Bullet offense in the opener with a 2-for-4 day, adding two RBIs and a run scored.
In the nightcap, it was Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) who did the heavy hitting, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double.
Gettysburg got help in the opener thanks to six errors by the Falcons (11-11), scoring all six unearned runs in the third and fourth innings.
Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led off the visitors' third, reaching second on a dropped fly ball.
Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) dropped down her first of four sacrifice bunts in the twinbill, including three in her three first-game plate appearances, to move Miller to third.
An RBI single through the right-side by Molly Myer (Springvale, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) plated Miller for the 1-0 Bullet advantage.
Pareso reached on the second Messiah error of the frame, and Pilarcik followed with an RBI double to center. An error on the relay in allowed Pareso to score as well, giving Gettysburg a 3-0 lead.
After Rebecca Croft got her first of two strikeouts, Gutermuth went up the middle to score Pilarcik.
Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) prolonged the inning, reaching on the fourth error of the frame, before Croft – facing the ninth hitter of the inning – got a groundball to get out of further trouble.
With her team up 4-0, Miller led off the fourth, reaching on another error before Dean made it look like a carbon-copy of the previous frame with another sacrifice.
After Croft got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Pareso and Pilarcik tallied back-to-back singles to make it a 6-0 game.
Kiry did her job, allowing just two Falcons to reach in the first five frames, including a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth. But, a leaping grab by Pareso started a double play to end the frame.
With two away in the sixth, Ruth Van Yperen looped a ball into shallow left to break up Kiry second-straight bid at a no-hitter.
Karen Robb followed with a single to center and Lana Trotter was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Kiry induced sixth groundout of the game to keep the shutout intact.
In the nightcap, Pareso led things off with a single to right before Pilarcik tallied the first of four Gettysburg sacrifices in the contest to move her Pareso up to second.
Sagaities walked before Gutermuth laced an RBI single into center to score Pareso, and chase Falcon starter – and game-one reliever – Vikki Downes in favor of Trotter.
With Gutermuth at second and two away, Miller doubled to right and Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) singled to left for a 3-0 Bullet edge.
Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) led off the visitor second with a single before Dean notched her fourth consecutive sacrifice to move Gorsuch to second.
Pareso helped herself out, tripling to the gap in right-center to score Gorsuch before a Pilarcik walk put runners at the corners with one out.
After Pareso scored on wild pitch and with two down, Gutermuth doubled to left, scoring both Pilarcik for a 6-0 lead.
The Bullets tacked one on in the seventh when Miller, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on a Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) double off the right-field wall.
Pareso, who got a double play to get around a leadoff walk, pitched with just four baserunners the rest of the way.
Gettysburg returns to action with a home doubleheader on Saturday against Haverford. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
