Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – With one out in the 10th inning, Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) rocketed a ball down the left-field line to break a 2-all deadlock and lift Gettysburg to a 3-2 victory over visiting Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Friday.
Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) went the full 10 innings to give the Bullets (10-12, 3-1 CC) their conference-leading 12th complete game of the season. Whitman struck out seven along the way to improve to 3-2.
Dan Tischler pitched an inning and third in relief of starter Jeremy Knox to pick up the loss – his first decision of 2005 – for the Diplomats (7-6, 2-2 CC), who defeated Gettysburg 3-1 on Tuesday in Lancaster.
After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) led off the 10th, reaching on the second F&M error of the game.
Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) did his job, dropping a bunt down the first-base line to move Bonyai up to second.
Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) walked to bring Carey up with two on and one out.
Carey pulled a 1-1 pitch right at the Diplomat third baseman but the ball dropped into shallow left, leading John Campo to wave Bonyai around third, where he scored without a play.
Trailing 2-0 after seven-and-a-half innings, pinch hitter Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) laced a leadoff single into the gap in left-center.
After McNamara was lifted for pinch runner Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa), Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) made it back-to-back with a single into right-center.
Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) dropped down his first sacrifice of the season to put runners at second and third with one away.
A Bonyai single through the right side plated Giordano and McGee to knot the game at 2.
After Whitman had faced the minimum through the first three innings thanks in part to his first of two pickoffs after a two-out bunt single in the second, Pat O'Reilly dropped a single into left-center.
A Rob Stern double into the right-field corner put runners at second and third with no outs.
After an infield popout, Corey Caruthers hit a deep fly-ball out to center, plating O'Reilly for the 1-0 Franklin & Marshall lead.
With one out in the sixth, O'Reilly went deep to right field for a double and Stern drew a full-count walk.
Caruthers notched his second RBI of the day, dropping a ball into shallow right to score O'Reilly.
McGee tallied his first collegiate two-hit day, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, while Pernice recorded his team-leading seventh multiple-hit outing for Gettysburg.
The Bullets, who were held to one hit through the first six innings, exploded for seven hits over the final four frames out-hit the Diplomats, 8-6.
By virtue of a 7-6 Muhlenberg victory against Haverford, Gettysburg moves into a four-way tie for first place and will meet two of the other three teams in doubleheaders this weekend.
The Bullets travel to Ursinus for a doubleheader on Saturday before returning home to play host to Haverford for two on Sunday. The first game both days begins at 12:30 p.m.
