Betts has career day as Gettysburg downs Bryn Mawr, 21-5; Kelly nets five points in win

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) and Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Acad. of the Holy Cross) scored a game-high four goals apiece as seventh-ranked Gettysburg defeated Bryn Mawr 21-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

 Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) collected a team-high five points on the afternoon, scoring twice and handing out three assists to help the Bullets (9-2, 5-1 CC) improve to 12-0 all-time against the Owls (3-8, 0-5 CC). Betts, a sophomore who entered the day with eight career goals, struck four times in the game’s final 25:43 to set a single-game career high.

 Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) added three goals in the win, her second hat trick of the week.

 Millie Bond led Bryn Mawr with three goals while Jennifer Lam scored twice.

 Keyed by all five of Kelly’s points, Gettysburg raced to first-half leads of 8-0, 12-1 and 13-2 en route to the victory.

 Kelly and Lowe each scored twice in the game’s first 10 minutes, staking the Bullets to a 5-0 lead. Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) recorded two of her three assists in the opening burst.

 Kelly set up Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) at 10:32, and Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) and Delauney netted back-to-back unassisted goals for an 8-0 advantage with 15:15 left in the half.

 Lam put the Owls on the scoreboard at 16:01, but Delauney and Lowe scored in a span of 26 seconds to make it 10-1. Shihadeh, Delauney and Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) tallied in the final 3:38 of the first half for a 13-2 halftime lead.

 Betts scored half of Gettysburg’s eight second-half goals, including three straight in a 7-minute, 19-second span for her first collegiate hat trick. Freshman Kara Tammany (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) added her first collegiate goal with 6:10 remaining.

 Shihadeh finished with four points while Ceglarski led the Bullets with four draw controls. Kate Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) recorded a team-high three caused turnovers, increasing her team lead in that category to 32.

 Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday at home against fifth-ranked College of New Jersey. Game time is 2 p.m.
