Sowanick keys big first half as Gettysburg rolls past Washington, 15-6

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis) scored three of his career-high four goals during a 10-0 first-half run, leading ninth-ranked Gettysburg over No. 8 Washington 15-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) also scored four times, increasing his team-leading goal total to 21 as the Bullets (6-3, 3-0 CC) remained perfect at home in 2005 (4-0). Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) added two goals and three assists, handing the Shoremen (5-3, 3-1 CC) only their second loss in the last six meetings between the two teams.

With the win, Gettysburg moved into a tie for first place in the CC with Franklin & Marshall.

Jon Spivey and Kevin Nolan led Washington with two goals apiece while Kevin Thibadeau made 14 saves.

Powered by a barrage of first-half goals, the Bullets cruised to victory in the CC’s perennial conference championship rematch.

Spivey put the Shoremen ahead 1-0 just 1 minute, 26 seconds into the game and scored his team’s second goal with 1:34 left in the first half.

In between, however, Gettysburg scored 10 straight goals to seize control.

Sowanick started the burst with an unassisted goal at 11:38 and Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) followed off a feed from Stewart at 10:15, putting the hosts ahead to stay. Sowanick followed 63 seconds later and completed his hat trick for a 4-1 lead with 2:32 left in the quarter, the first of four Bullet goals in the final minutes of the quarter.

Less than a minute later, two of Chris Renzi’s (Fairport, NY/Fairport) eight first-quarter face-off wins led to back-to-back goals by Pryor and a 6-1 advantage.

But Gettysburg wasn’t finished with the first quarter. In a span of nine seconds, Renzi won the next draw, Ted Leonard (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) scooped the resulting ground ball and finished a half-field run with his second goal of the season, making it 7-1.

Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) got into the act early in the second quarter, scoring off a feed from Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) with 12:33 left in the half. Stewart struck unassisted 56 seconds later and Renzi capped the 10-0 run with 2:16 remaining before the break.

Spivey connected on an extra-man goal with 1:34 remaining in the half, snapping Washington’s 27-minute scoring drought and setting the halftime score at 10-2.

The Bullets led by as many as 11 down the stretch, going ahead 15-4 after scoring five of the first seven goals in the second half.

Gallant finished with three points for Gettysburg, scoring one goal and adding two assists. Vaughan made 11 saves before giving way to Stuart Brown (Wyndmoor, PA/Penn Charter) in the game’s final minutes.

Led by senior defensemen Matt Smith (Quakertown, PA/Germantown Acad.) and Matt Stanley (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall College), who combined for six ground balls and four caused turnovers, the Bullet defense held the Shoremen to 10 of their 24 shots in the decisive first half.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against sixth-ranked Messiah. Game time is 4 p.m.
