Gettysburg splits doubleheader at Ursinus; Bullets explode for 11 runs in nightcap

Box Scores – Game One | Game Two

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchiss School) and Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) each notched three hits in the nightcap to lead Gettysburg to a doubleheader split at Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.

The Bullets (11-13, 4-2 CC) matched a season high with 14 hits in the nightcap, rallying for an 11-3 victory after the Bears (5-7, 4-2 CC) took a 4-1 win in game one.

Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) – getting his first start in more than a week – capped off a 20-hit twinbill with Gettysburg's first home run of the season.

Sophomore Cody Mang (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) pitched the first seven hitting of the nightcap to earn his second win in as many starts this spring, striking out three along the way. Rod Smith allowed six earned runs on 10 hits to record the loss for Ursinus.

In the opener, Clay Miller went the full seven, recording three strikeouts for the Bears. Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) made it 13 complete games for the Bullets, tallying four strikeouts in the loss.

Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), who came into the day with two extra-base hits in 17 appearances, led off the third inning of the nightcap with his second of three doubles.

After Olson went to second on a wild pitch, Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) notched an RBI single to give Gettysburg a 1-0 advantage.

Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) singled to center to put runners at first and second before Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

With two outs, Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) singled home Carey and Ball for a 3-0 Bullet edge.

The Bears got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame when Tommy Herrmann led off with a single.

Michael Ziemak dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Herrmann to second before the lone stole base of the game put Herrmann on third with one out.

Ryan Regensburg singled to center to plate Herrmann and pull Ursinus within two.

A walk and three singles led to three more Gettysburg runs in the fifth to make it 6-1.

A Bonyai double scored Ball, who reached on a two-out walk one batter earlier, to stretch the Bullet advantage to 7-1 in the sixth.

A Ted Pitrowicz double and back-to-back groundouts in the home sixth and a hit batsman and RBI single by Ziemak in the seventh allowed the Bears to close to within 7-3.

Bonyai notched his third hit of the game to lead off the ninth. McDonald walked and Donohue singled home Bonyai to put runners at the corners and set up Straub's three-run blast over the left-field wall.

Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic), pitching the final two innings in relief of Mang, retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, including his lone strikeout.

In the opener, Ursinus broke a 1-all tie with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third.

Ziemak reached on a one-out error. After a groundout moved him to third, Piotrowicz doubled to break the deadlock and Son Sheppard followed with an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.

Back-to-back two-out singles in the home fifth set the final margin.

The Bullets got things started with three straight singles with one out in the top of the first.

Ball, Bonyai and Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) each tallied singles to load the bases for McDonald, who flew out to deep right to plate Ball from third for the sacrifice fly and 1-0 Gettysburg advantage.

The Bears got the equalizer in the bottom of the second after a Piotrowicz leadoff single.

With two outs, Ursinus got help with a dropped fly ball – the first of two Bullet errors – that allowed Piotrowicz to score from third.

Pernice went 2-for-3 in the first game for his team-leading eighth multiple-hit game for Gettysburg in 2005.

Piotrowicz was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Bears.

The Bullets return to action in a home doubleheader against Haverford on Sunday. The first game begins at 12:30 p.m.
