CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to help Gettysburg split with Washington (Md.) and clinch hosting rights for the 2005 Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs in softball action on Sunday.
The Bullets (29-8-1, 13-3) claimed the win in game one 4-0, but fell to the Shorewomen (19-15, 7-9 CC) in the nightcap, 6-0. With the win, Gettysburg clinches home field advantage for the playoffs while Washington's post-season chances remain untold.
Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) pitched a four-hit shutout, her eighth of the season, and tallied four strikeouts in the opening win while Meghan Howlett (Millsboro, DE/Milford) took the game-two loss in the circle in her fifth complete game of the season.
The Bullets jumped off to an early lead in game one, scoring all they would need in the first inning.
Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) lead off the inning with a single, then stole second to be in scoring position. Gale doubled to plate Pareso before making the second out at third base.
Gettysburg added three insurance runs in the third that sealed the 4-0 win for the Bullets.
Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) walked to lead off the inning before a Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) sent her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Pareso then reached on an error before Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) hit an RBI-single to score Gorsuch and advance Pareso to third.
Gale collected her second RBI of the day with a base hit that scored Pareso and advanced Pilarcik to third. Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) then singled to score Pilarcik and give the Bullets a 4-0 lead after three innings.
In game two, Pareso went 2-for-3 but couldn't help the Bullets complete the sweep as they fell to Washington for the first time since the 1997 season, snapping a 15-game winning streak over the Shorewomen.
Washington jumped off to a demanding early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning off two-RBI doubles from Amanda Campbell and Andrea Braverman.
The Shorewomen out hit the Bullets 9-3 while Michelle Laque pitched a three-hit shutout with one walk and one strikeout.
With 29 regular season wins, the 2005 Bullets have tallied a program-best single season win total.
The Bullets will play the CC fourth seed as they host the conference playoffs at Bobby Jones Field this weekend. Game times are to be announced.
