Box Scores – Game One | Game Two
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) launched a two-run home run over the right field wall in the first inning of game two to lead Gettysburg to a split with Washington in the final Centennial Conference (CC) baseball doubleheader for both teams on Sunday.
After the Bullets (20-18, 11-7 CC) were shut out for the first time this season 5-0 in the opener, Bonyai staked his squad to a 2-1 lead en route to a 5-3 victory in the nightcap to get the split needed for a spot in next weekend's CC playoffs.
By virtue of Johns Hopkins' sweep of Ursinus and Gettysburg owning a tiebreaker with the Bears, the Bullets will make their first appearance in the four-year history of the CC postseason. The one victory also gives the Orange & Blue its first 20-win season since 2001, when the squad finished one game behind Johns Hopkins for the conference title.
Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) led the Bullet offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.
John Marshall pitched a two-hit shutout for the Shoremen (17-13, 9-9 CC) in game one, striking out two.
Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) went the distance for Gettysburg, allowing six hits and four earned runs and striking out six to fall to 4-3 on the season.
After Whitman had retired the first nine Washington batters in order, Eric Guttermann led off the top of the fourth with a triple to the center-field fence.
Zachary Huba followed with an RBI single near the line in right field.
A Jim Barossi single and Mike DeBartolome sacrifice put runners at second and third with one away.
Huba scored on John Schmidt RBI groundout to make it a 2-0 game before Whitman got a strikeout to end the inning.
After sitting down nine in a row once again, DeBartolome led off the visitor seventh with a single through the left side.
A double from Schmidt put runners at second and third before a Mike Parton single up the middle cleared the bases to make it a 4-0 game.
A failed pickoff, sacrifice and throwing error allowed Parton to score to set the final margin.
Tied at 3 in the nightcap, Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) doubled down the left-field line after the stretch.
With two outs and Straub still standing on second, Carey doubled into left field, scoring Straub to give the Bullets a one-run advantage after seven complete innings.
Gettysburg tacked on an insurance run in the eighth after pinch-hitter Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) singled into right center to lead off the frame.
A Michael Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) sacrifice moved McNamara into scoring position and forced a pitching change.
Shawn Hampt walked the first batter he faced, Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hill East).
With two outs in the inning, Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) singled down the left-field line to plate McNamara for the 5-3 lead.
Working around his lone hit allowed in 2 2/3 innings – a leadoff single – reliever Ross Hempel (Marriotsville, MD/Glenelg) got a strikeout, fly out and ground out for his fifth win of the season.
Back-to-back errors to lead off the second game set up first and third.
A double-play ball got starter Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) his first two outs, but allowed Guettermann to score from third.
Carey lined a one-out single into the gap before Bonyai hammered a 3-1 pitch well over the right-field fence for his second roundtripper of the season and first by a Bullet at Kirchhoff Field since it was christened on Apr. 17, 2004.
A one-out single from Ball and two-out RBI double from Freeburger in the home second stretched the advantage to 3-1.
DeBartolome drew a leadoff walk to open the visitor fourth before back-to-back singles from Schmidt and Parton loaded the bases.
A wild pitch scored DeBartolome, and an RBI groundout from Jay McEvoy knotted the contest at 3.
A one-out walk in the seventh chased Borman, and Hempel needed just three pitches to get Guettermann to fly into a double play and get out of the frame.
Freeburger went 2-for-4 in game two with two RBIs.
Gettysburg will need to await the outcome of the remainder of the CC schedule on Monday and Tuesday to know its positioning in the upcoming tournament. The Bullet will be playing in the 3-4 game on Friday against either Ursinus, Haverford or Johns Hopkins at a location to be determined.
Ursinus and Johns Hopkins each have doubleheaders on Monday while Haverford has a twinbill on both Monday and Tuesday to set the final standings.
