GETTYSBURG, Pa. Evan Gallant (Lutherville,
MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis) each scored three goals to lead No.
4 Gettysburg to a 16-9 victory over 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in the
second round of the 2005 NCAA Division III mens lacrosse championships on
Saturday.
Gallant, Sowanick, Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Marks)
and T.J. Liberto
(Arnold, MD/St. Marys) combined to net eight goals in the first
two periods, staking the Bullets (15-3) to a 13-6 halftime advantage.
Pryor added two assists to help Gettysburg
win its 10th straight contest and advance to face top-ranked Salisbury in the national
quarterfinals on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The two-time defending champion Sea Gulls
moved on with a 13-9 win over Cabrini.
John Schlegel
scored five goals for the Battling Bishops (10-4), who were meeting the Bullets
for the second time in the NCAA playoffs a 12-5 Ohio Wesleyan victory in
1989.
Sowanick and Chase
Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
each finished solo runs in the games first 3 minutes, 7 seconds to stake
Gettysburg to a 2-0 lead,
and the hosts never looked back.
Sowanick got things going off a Battling Bishop turnover, scoring
unassisted at the 13:11 mark.
Stewart tallied his lone marker 1 minute, 18 seconds
later to force an OWU timeout.
Chris Renzi (Fairport,
NY/Fairport) won the fourth of 11 straight face-offs to start the
game for the Bullets, and Pryor tallied unassisted 22 seconds after Harrison Iuliano
cut the Battling Bishop deficit in half at 9:31.
Gallant scored off a Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin)
assist with 7:53 to play in the first quarter to stretch the Bullet advantage
to 4-1.
Schlegel took advantage of a man-up opportunity to cut
the deficit to 4-2 at 6:20, but a minute later Liberto
re-established the three-goal advantage.
Jared Harriman
(Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) finished
a back-and-forth end to first quarter with a solo marker with 49 seconds remaining
in the period to give the Bullets a 7-4 lead.
Within the first two minutes of the second quarter, Jim Culp (Swarthmore,
PA/Ridley) and Brian Ford (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) pushed
the lead to 9-4 with unassisted goals.
After Schlegel make it 9-5 with 11:39 to play until halftime,
Liberto, Freehill and Sowanick
all scored unassisted to make it a 12-5 game at the 4:37 mark.
After Schlegal broke through
unassisted 3 minutes, 17 seconds into the third quarter, the defenses took over.
Harriman was the only Bullet who found the back of the
net in a six-save period by Battling Bishop goalkeeper Paul McCommons, who finished the
day with 12 stops.
The only other dent on Gettysburg keeper Pat Vaughan in a nine-shot quarter for Ohio Wesleyan was an
unassisted tally by Jarred Law
with 47 seconds remaining in the period.
Schlegel put the exclamation point on his five-goal day,
finishing a Tyler Treece pass 21 seconds into the final quarter, pulling
the Battling Bishops within 14-9.
Gallant and Sowanick capped
their hat tricks with goals at the 14:24 and 7:35 marks, respectively.
Gallant scored off a Pryor assist while Sowanick drilled home a Gallant feed.
Vaughan finished the day with 10 saves.
The Bullets ended the contest holding a 17-10 advantage
in face-offs, including 13 wins by Renzi one
off his season high of 14 against Messiah on Apr. 13.
In their earlier meeting this season, Salisbury
defeated Gettysburg,
13-7.
