Gettysburg falls to Ursinus 4-0 in CC title game

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Marci Logan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored while Erin Skinner pitched a six-hit shutout to lead Ursinus past Gettysburg and claim the Centennial Conference championship at Bobby Jones Field on Sunday.

The Bullets (31-10-1) defeated McDaniel, the defending champions, 9-4 in the elimination game to advance to the title game, but were unable to scored against the Bears (35-8) to finish in the runner-up position in three out of the last four years.

Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) went 2-for-3 for Gettysburg in game two while Meghan Howlett (Millsboro, DE/Milford) took the loss in the circle after pitching two innings and giving up three runs.

Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) picked up the win in the game against the Green Terror in game one after pitching three innings while Howlett collected the save in relief. Kiry relieved Howlett in game two to pitch four innings.

Skinner held the Bullet bats in check, scattering six hits across seven innings for the Bears in the title game as the Bears out hit Gettysburg 11-6.

Gettysburg connected for two hits in the first, third and fifth innings, threatening to score in each inning, but it was Ursinus who jumped ahead early for the win.

In the bottom of the first with one out, Erin McHugh singled up the middle before Logan nailed her first double of the day out to right-centerfield to score McHugh. Mary Reid then singled to score Logan and then advanced to second on the throw and third on a Bullet error.               

Sarah Hennessey drove home the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Reid and giving the Bears a 3-0 advantage.

In top of the fifth, Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) ripped a base hit to left field before Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic), advancing Dean to second and third after a Bear miscue.

Back-to-back strikeouts by Skinner cancelled the Bullet offensive threat and secured the win as she tallied two more strikeouts and a ground out in the seventh inning. Skinner recorded eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Gettysburg took advantage of five McDaniel errors and collected 13 hits to eliminate McDaniel from the championship by a score of 9-4.

The Green Terror took a 1-0 lead after the first inning off a Diana Rosemier hit and a Bullet error, but couldn't hold on for long.

The Bullets converted four McDaniel miscues into a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning.

With one out, Gale drilled a triple out to right-center field then scored on a wild pitch. Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) and Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) each reached on Green Terror errors.

Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) singled up the middle then Gutermuth scored while Sagaities got picked off at second. Eiden scored on an error that put Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) at first.

Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) hit an RBI-single up the middle that brought in Miller.

The Bullets scored three more runs in the sixth off singles from Eiden, Pareso, Pilarcik and Gale to take a 7-2 lead.

Sagaities, Gorsuch, Dean and Pareso each recorded a base hit in the seventh to bring in two more runs and seal the 9-4 win.

Pareso went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored while Gorsuch went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Eiden went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
